Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) has officially thrown her support behind Pete Hegseth for Secretary of Defense, delivering a crushing blow to Democrats hoping to block his confirmation. In a statement Monday night, Ernst explained her decision:
“After four years of weakness in the White House, Americans deserve a strong Secretary of Defense. Our next commander-in-chief selected Pete Hegseth to serve in this role, and after our conversations, hearing from Iowans, and doing my job as a United States Senator, I will support President Trump’s pick for Secretary of Defense.”
Ernst also emphasized her commitment to working with Hegseth on building the most lethal fighting force, maintaining high standards for women in combat roles, and addressing sexual assault prevention in the ranks.
