Why do they feel compelled to compare the two?  My guess is they want to justify their decision to bench the A-10.  The decision isn't about which one is better qualified for close air support, but which is the larger investment.  Since the F-35 has that one hand hands down and wasn't built for that mission, it needs the justification.

It's an apples-peaches comparison. The A-10 is all about CAS; the F-35 is a multi-role fighter. The A-10 won't do well at air-to-air fighting (IIRC, an A-10 shot down a helicopter or two in the Gulf War). The F-35 won't do well at CAS.
