The Great Lakes have a healthy population of smelt. Why on earth would California prioritize them over the safety and well-being of people and property?

California Gov. Gavin Newsom's LA wildfire 'photo op' sparks fury - as critics point out damning detail: Live updates
By GERMANIA RODRIGUEZ POLEO, CHIEF U.S. REPORTER and MELISSA KOENIG and BRITTANY CHAIN FOR DAILYMAIL.COM

California governor Gavin Newsom was slammed after sharing a clip that showed him with his hands in his pockets as he reviewed the Los Angeles wildfires.

Officials said on Wednesday morning that the files have left at least two dead, as well as many 'significant injuries.'

The wildfires are rapidly spreading across Los Angeles today with firefighters conceding they remain powerless to contain the flames while because of strong winds.

Harris’s California neighborhood ordered to evacuate as wildfires blaze through area
by Sarah Fortinsky - 01/08/25 11:20 AM ET

Vice President Harris’s neighborhood in Los Angeles was ordered to evacuate Tuesday night as wildfires blazed through the area, her spokesperson said Wednesday.

“Last night, the Vice President’s neighborhood in Los Angeles was put under an evacuation order. No one was in her home at the time,” spokesperson Ernie Apreza said on social platform X.

“She and the Second Gentleman are praying for the safety of their fellow Californians, the heroic first responders, and Secret Service personnel,” Apreza added.

Harris, a lifelong Californian who served as the state’s U.S. senator and attorney general, said in a statement Tuesday that she was briefed about the state of the wildfires and would continue to be updated regularly “about these damaging wildfires and the coordinated efforts to contain them.”

“I am also urging residents in the affected areas to listen to local officials, remain vigilant, and evacuate immediately if told to do so,” Harris continued in her statement Tuesday evening.

It allows them to drive farmers and property owners out of the Central Valley by restricting water, and then buying the land cheap to resell to the CA "high speed" rail authority at an increased premium.

Californians Drag LA’s Democrat Mayor For Attending African Inauguration While Her City Goes Up In Flames
By: Shawn Fleetwood
January 08, 2025

Los Angeles Democrat Mayor Karen Bass is taking heat for attending a presidential inauguration in Africa while her city’s residents endured massive fires.

While thousands of L.A. locals were fleeing their homes due to the destructive wildfires engulfing the region, Bass was busy attending the Tuesday inauguration of Ghana President John Dramani Mahama. The White House announced on Friday that the California Democrat would attend the event as part of its presidential delegation.

Bass served on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs as chair of the Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights and International Organizations prior to becoming mayor of Los Angeles.

While reportedly expected to return to the U.S. on Wednesday, Bass’s absence amid the disaster plaguing her constituents quickly generated outrage from local Californians.

California Rules Caused Insurance Companies to Cancel Policies Before Wildfires

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) and the Democrat-run government of California caused insurance companies to cancel many of their fire insurance policies — with many residents of Pacific Palisades losing their policies just before the wildfires.

Because the Protected Species Act enacted by Congress and signed into law by Nixon has been twisted to mean ALL species or subspecies of a genre MUST be protected at all costs.

Undoubtedly, the smelt inhabiting California has been designated as a subspecies to that of the Great Lakes so it has its own status of protection as interpreted under the Act.

The ACT leaves prioritization of humans secondary, and has limited economic justification of efforts toward practicality of effort, so common sense is thrown out the window by the Deep State in pursuing an expansion of the Act's purposes.

Bass knew weeks ago when this trip was set up this fire would happen? I would have voted against her if I lived in the Land of LA, and voted for Snoopy D. Beagle if her opponent were equally Prog, but this "dragging" for what she could not foreknow is not rational.

Only a complete idiot would have that as a goal instead of the goal of fire mitigation and control as #1

DEI Kills should be the incoming federal administration motto
well even without DEI the democrats have been priming California for fires like this with their dangerous polices and the mayor of LA didn’t have the reservoirs that feed the hydrants refilled and cut the FD budget by $20 million. I can’t wait for the screaming from the liberal ‘celebrities’ over losing their homes and possessions because of the insane polices they endorsed.

Breitbart editor (who lives in the Pacific Palisades area) writes:

Joel Pollak
@joelpollak
A brief, factual thread about the POLICY issues around the Palisades fire. I will stick to what I know personally. I am covering for @BreitbartNews and available to help @FoxNews, @MSNBC, or anyone needing information and ideas, including the incoming Trump administration. (1/9)
1:34 PM · Jan 8, 2025

FOREST MANAGEMENT: This is an issue in California generally, but I will say in this IMMEDIATE area I have personally witnessed brush clearance on the trails in the mountains where the fire began. Any hurricane-force wind pushing a fire will be destructive, despite clearance (2/9)

RESERVOIRS: The Santa Ynez Reservoir near the fire outbreak was empty as of Sunday (I was up there). There are 10,000-gal water tanks in the Temescal Canyon for hydrants; don't know if they were full. After outbreak, I doubt whether water could have stopped the blaze anyway (3/9)

WATER: California generally does a terrible job of water management. L.A. (reclamation) and esp. San Diego (desalination) do better with new methods. I don't know if it's practical to divert surface water for firefighting, as some have suggested. But more supply is needed. (4/9)

PLANNING: Shockingly bad. The Highlands, near the fire, is an area with only one road in and out -- that's the road where people abandoned their cars and ran. There are erosion-prone hillsides with big developments that, to me, don't make sense. Rebuilding must change this. (5/9)

EMERGENCY RESPONSE: With greatest respect to those protecting us at great risk there were not enough police to direct traffic and fire authorities could have called evacuation sooner. Blame elected leaders who cut police budget in 2020 (BLM), and fire budget more recently. (6/9)

PUBLIC BEHAVIOR: Residents rose to the challenge; not one death in Palisades (yet). But outsiders have been shooting fireworks in our neighborhood for years, smoking pot in the dry mountains, etc. California has little public education about fire (as I've noted for years). (7/9)

FIRE INSURANCE: Democrats used socialist price controls to cap rates; the result is a shortage of insurance as companies leave or cancel policies. This was discussed on local Nextdoor in Dec. New "forced coverage" regs will make the problem worse. Need creative solutions. (8/9)

POLITICS: Mayor Karen Bass was in Ghana for no good reason. Governor Gavin Newsom thanked her for literally phoning it in. Our (effectively) one-party system fails to provide public accountability. Developer Rick Caruso (who lost to Bass) saved his mall. Only thing standing (9/9)
---------------------------
Re what he said about insurance:

Justine Bateman
@JustineBateman
A couple of years ago, insurance companies put in the necessary requests to the state of California to raise their rates. They were denied. So most of them pulled out of CA. It has been extremely difficult, if not impossible, to get house ins here since then.
Many of these now destroyed houses may be uninsured because CA wouldn’t let the companies raise rates to compensate for past fires, etc.

Yes, certain leftists already are blaming Trump for this, apparently unaware he hasn't held office in nearly four years. But here are some facts:

Bonchie
@bonchieredstate
While CA's water management is a big issue, it is also true that these fires typically start on federal land.
Guess whose administration canceled crucial controlled burns this fall so they wouldn't look bad if something went wrong?
That would be Joseph Robinette Biden.
11:21 AM · Jan 8, 2025

Bonchie
@bonchieredstate
During Donald Trump's first term, he tried to increase water diversions on federal land to help California's water supply.
The State of California and various environmental groups sued him and won.
Once again, owning the orange man took priority over protecting people.

California Rules Caused Insurance Companies to Cancel Policies Before Wildfires

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) and the Democrat-run government of California caused insurance companies to cancel many of their fire insurance policies — with many residents of Pacific Palisades losing their policies just before the wildfires.

https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2025/01/08/california-rules-caused-insurance-companies-to-cancel-policies-before-wildfires/

This is a statewide thing, causing problems for, probably, hundreds of thousands of home owners. Several insurance companies have ceased offering homeowners policies and have declined to renew or cancelled existing policies. In Ayn-Rand-ian terms, they have shrugged.

Now the predictable consequences - a large disaster was going to happen, only the timing and location was uncertain - have hit. Look for Dems and their MSM-shill mouthpieces to rail against greedy insurance companies to avoid admitting their stupid regs brought on the crisis.

The Enviros and envirocrats have proliferated sub-sub-sub-sub-...-sub-species in order to burden property and business owners via the ESA. The effects range from property owners being unable to create firebreaks around homes, to housing developments having to set aside swaths of undeveloped land for a protected butterfly (Santa Rosa area, 1990s), to courts forcing the release of water from reservoirs on the Sacramento River system during drought years (for the Delta smelt).

WATER: California generally does a terrible job of water management. ...

In the real world, all but one of California's major reservoirs is at or above historical average. The one that is not is just a little below historical average. Despite lacking a major river, such as the Mississippi, Missouri, Colorado, Ohio, or Rio Grande, flowing through CA, Lake Shasta is among the US' largest reservoirs (CA's largest, Lake Shasta, is on the Sacramento River; the river is entirely within northern CA, i.e. not a particularly large river). On a micro level, the water district in which I live, which is just part of Santa Clara County, has about a dozen reservoirs plus chains of percolation ponds along a couple of creeks to refresh and manage two aquifers, which store more water than all the reservoirs combined.

Pollak may know what's happening in his corner of the Land of LA, but I doubt he could find, e.g., the rather small Lake Natomas and the Nimbus Dam without searching on GoogMaps. I also wonder if he learned of the existence of Lake Oroville (CA's second largest reservoir) in 2017 when heavy rains and poor maintenance led to the possibility of the dam collapsing.

%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

I wonder if the cause of the Pacific Palisades Fire is the campfire of the Sacred Homeless or an arsonist.

Trump Vindicated After Video Resurfaces, Proves Him Right

Trending Politics News
By Chris Powell
January 8, 2025

As wildfires ravage Los Angeles County, leaving residents scrambling for safety, a resurfaced video of Donald Trump discussing California’s fire management policies has gone viral. The clip, taken from the former president’s appearance on the Joe Rogan podcast three months ago, showcases Trump’s stern criticism of California’s environmental policies and lack of forest maintenance. With three major wildfires burning out of control and zero percent containment, Trump’s remarks are being viewed in a new light.

In the podcast, Trump delved into California’s refusal to build water reservoirs and manage its forests, which he argued were key factors in preventing catastrophic wildfires. “They said, ‘We have no water,’” Trump said. “I said, do you have a drought? ‘No, we don’t have a drought.’ I said, why do you have no water? ‘Because the water isn’t allowed to flow down.’ It’s got a natural flow from Canada all the way up north, more water than they could ever use. And in order to protect a tiny little fish, the water up north gets routed into the Pacific Ocean. Millions and millions of gallons of water gets poured.”

Trump’s comments highlight a long-standing frustration with environmental regulations aimed at protecting the delta smelt, a small fish native to California’s waterways. “I could have water for all of that land, water for your forests,” he said. “You know your forests are dry as a bone.” He went on to explain how simple maintenance measures, like clearing deadfall and raking leaves, could save billions in fire damage each year.

Pentagon deploys Navy helicopters to California wildfires, but stresses high winds deterring efforts

The U.S. Department of Defense is deploying ten Navy helicopters with water delivery buckets to help suppress wildfires raging across southern California.

At a press conference Wednesday afternoon, Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said the 10 Navy helicopters come in addition to the California National Guard and the Nevada Nation Guard each readying an additional two "modular air fighting system units."

The Navy's helicopters with watery delivery buckets will "immediately assist with aerial suppression," Singh said, though adding that high winds were a deterrent.

"It's a matter of also, can those assets get in the air? And right now, I mean, Cal Fire is - has some of the best capabilities and equipment to fight fires in California," Singh said. "We can search assets, and, and the president has directed this department to bolster whatever California needs. But we have to work with California and right now, we can't even get assets up in the air because the fires are so bad and because the winds are so bad."

At President Biden's direction, the DoD "will provide additional firefighting personnel and capabilities," Singh said. "The federal government is working closely with the National Guard, which is deployed under the governor's state of emergency declaration."

Raging winds caught on camera as wildfires continue to ravage California

High winds are driving at least three major fires sweeping through Los Angeles.

Video shows the winds whipping over a roadway, pushing flames toward homes and businesses.

Ash and smoke can be seen in the video blowing in the overnight winds.

A fourth fire was reported in Acton Wednesday afternoon, according to the Angeles National Forest.

Authorities said they are fighting a brush fire off Soledad Canyon Road in Acton.

Acton is due north of downtown Los Angeles.

The Palisades fire is burning to the west of the city, the Hurst fire is burning to the north west and the Eaton fire is burning to the west.

LA Times owner blames mayor for cutting fire department budget ahead of wildfires

Los Angeles Times owner Dr. Pat Soon-Shiong reminded followers how "competence matters" regarding LA mayor Karen Bass during the ongoing Pacific Palisades fires.

As wildfires continued to rage across Los Angeles County on Wednesday, Soon-Shiong directed his X followers to his paper for live updates on the situation while appearing to criticize Bass’s handling of the city before the crisis.

"Our hearts go out to those who have lost their homes and are seeking shelter. Fires in LA are sadly no surprise, yet the Mayor cut LA Fire Department’s budget by $23M. And reports of empty fire hydrants raise serious questions. Competence matters…Follow @latimes for live coverage in partnership with @Spectrum. The live camera view coverage will give our readers a real time view of the fires and the stream is open to all Angelenos. Stay safe," Soon-Shiong wrote.............

FAST FACTS

Six wildfires are burning in Los Angeles County, including the Pacific Palisades and Sylmar neighborhoods of Los Angeles and another near the City of Pasadena.

The Palisades Fire, the Eaton Fire, the Hurst Fire, the Olivas Fire, the Lidia Fire and the Woodley Fire are all raging as of Wednesday, according to CAL FIRE.

The fires are zero percent contained, officials say

More than 70,000 residents are under evacuation orders as the LA area wildfires threaten at least 28,000 structures.

More than 3 million were without power in Los Angeles County by Wednesday afternoon, according to Southern California Edison (SCE).

The fires are being pushed by Santa Ana winds from the east, and officials warn the worst is yet to come.

In the real world, Federal courts have mandated a certain level of water flow into the Delta from the Sacramento River. In that same real world, the 8th largest reservoir in the US, Lake Shasta on the Sacramento River, is at 96.6% of "full pool", https://www.lakelevels.info/USA/California/ . Lake Oroville, CA's second largest reservoir, on the Feather River, a tributary of the Sacramento, is at about 92%. Folsom Lake on the American River is at 85.5%. As can be seen on the chart several reservoirs are above "full pool". The list is very incomplete, BTW. I could name half a dozen or more reservoirs not on the list.

California is only lacking in reservoirs in the sense that the enviros have succeeded in blocking more over the past few decades, though a very large one is planned for, IIRC, the end of this decade. The other problem, besides the enviros, is that suitable creeks/rivers and and sites for dams and valleys for the lakes are no longer plentiful.

A California assemblyman writes on X:

For everyone saying this is not a time for blame, this is exactly the moment that the people who have been responsible for the mismanagement of California's fire policies be held accountable.

Our governor has been obsessed with holding a special session to "Trump-proof" CA, when he should be focused on FIRE-PROOFING our communities.

Here are a few hard facts about the democrat-run state's failures to address fire prevention:

In the 1950s the average timber harvest in California was around 6.0 billion board feet per year. Today, that number has dropped to ~1.5 billion board feet per year.

California’s forests, which cover a third of the state, are now choked with nearly 163 million dead trees.  https://t.co/XpYq1Sk7AL

California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and other regulatory policies limit the ability of local government and fire management services to clear dead trees and vegetation. (This is a big deal and prevents much of the controlled burns we desperately need.)

Multiple bills, including AB 2330, AB 1951, and AB 2639 were rejected by the democrat-controlled Legislature or vetoed by the Governor that would have exempted wildfire prevention projects from CEQA and other permitting issues.

Other legislation, including SB 1003, would have provided CEQA exemptions for utility undergrounding projects, as power lines that are not adequately cleared of debris present major wildfire risks. These bills also failed to reach the Governor’s desk. The Link Between Power Lines and Wildfires

California has prioritized “suppression-only” strategies and failed to remove accumulated vegetation, leading to denser forests with increased fuel loads – our forests have become tinderboxes, leading to devastating outcomes when a fire starts. Fixing California: Forest Management

Bottom line: many of the wild fires CA experienced could have been prevented or significantly mitigated with better management, policies, and funding. This is a time for accountability and, more importantly, change in how we approach fire policy. Many of the rejected proposals were brought by Republicans, and I suspect they were rejected for that reason. There is only one political party to blame for CA's failures.
