Green extremists just lost the war on cows
Story by Jamie Blackett • 15h
The new year has begun with the announcement that it will now be possible to breed cows that are less prone to flatulence and will therefore release less methane into the atmosphere. The birth of Hilda, a calf selectively bred at our local research farm in Dumfries, has been greeted as the news that will save the nation’s cattle from the sinister attentions of the radical environmentalists.
The green campaign to curtail – or even eliminate – the farming of cows for milk or beef, because of the supposed costs to the environment, has picked up pace in recent years. But what if those costs can be radically reduced?
Many of us, particularly those of us educated at boys’ boarding schools, have long recognised the theory – supported by ample anecdotal evidence – that some people are more flatulent than others. We now know for certain that the same holds true for cows, and that we can influence the bovine genome in a less burpy direction.
With my farmer head on, I can see the advantages. For one thing, it may help us to counter the Campaign for Random Accusations against Pastoralists.
