Bill Byrge, character actor, dies at 86

Byrge is best known for his character of "Bobby," a wiry, mostly mute, toothless mime of a character who was often paired with loudmouths, most famously Gailard Sartain's "Chuck." A librarian by trade, Byrge was initially hired off the street by Carden & Cherry, an advertising agency based in Tennessee, for a series of "Chuck and Bobby" commercials in the vein of their other ad campaigns that had featured Jim Varney. This began a string of appearances with Varney in the Ernest P. Worrell films, which earned him the most national recognition.

‘Mr. Baseball’ Bob Uecker, Brewers announcer, dies at 90

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Bob Uecker, the voice of his hometown Milwaukee Brewers who after a short playing career earned the moniker “Mr. Baseball” and honors from the Hall of Fame, has died. He was 90.

The team announced Uecker died Thursday morning, calling it “one of the most difficult days in Milwaukee Brewers history.” In a statement released by the club, Uecker’s family said he had battled small cell lung cancer since early 2023.

“Even in the face of this challenge, his enthusiasm for life was always present, never allowing his spirit to falter,” the family said.

Uecker was best known as a colorful comedian and broadcaster who earned his nickname during one of his numerous appearances on Johnny Carson’s late night show.

Born and raised in Milwaukee, Uecker signed his first professional contract with the Milwaukee Braves in 1956 and reached the majors in 1962. He’d last six seasons in the big leagues as a backup catcher, finishing with a .200 average and 14 homers.

Thanks for posting.  I'm a huge Lynch fan.  His movies are not for everyone.

'Pilgrim with the Cross': Arthur Blessitt 'Departs to Heaven' After Taking Jesus to 300+ Regions

https://cbn.com/news/world/pilgrim-cross-arthur-blessitt-departs-heaven-after-taking-jesus-300-regions

Quote
A traveling Christian preacher known for carrying a cross through every nation of the world has died. Arthur Blessitt "departed to heaven" on Tuesday, according to an announcement on his ministry page.

The 84-year-old is widely recognized for carrying a 12-foot, 45-lb cross over 43,000 miles in 324 countries, major island groups, and territories.

Blessitt was known internationally as the "Pilgrim with the Cross" and dedicated his life to spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

In his book The Cross, Blessitt wrote, "After having carried the cross in every nation, I can say that the world is open to and hungry for the good news of Jesus and the cross. The only problem is that the laborers are few, as Jesus said."

"My goal has been to get the cross off the wall and into people's minds and hearts, where they can understand and experience its message," he continued. "A large cross being carried makes an unforgettable impact on the mind of the person who sees it. Years later people still remember when and where they saw the cross being carried."

Blessitt became known in the Jesus People era of the late 60s and early 70s. Time flies and notables from that era are getting up there in years ... Barry McGuire will turn 90 this year, and Anne Herring (2nd Chapter of Acts) will turn 80 this year.

Cecile Richards, prominent women's rights activist and former Planned Parenthood president, dies at 67

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/cecile-richards-womens-rights-activist-former-planned-parenthood-president-dies-67/

Quote
Cecile Richards, a feminist activist and former president of Planned Parenthood, died Monday after battling cancer, her family said. Richards was 67.

"This morning our beloved Cecile passed away at home, surrounded by her family and her ever-loyal dog, Ollie. Our hearts are broken today but no words can do justice to the joy she brought to our lives," read a statement attributed to Richards' husband, Kirk Adams, and their three children, which CBS News obtained. "We are grateful to the doctors and health care workers who provided her excellent care and the friends, family, and well-wishers who have been by her side during this challenging time."
...
Richards was diagnosed in 2023 with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. She initially shared the news in an interview with The Cut, published last January.

Glioblastoma is the cancer that killed John McCain III. Considering what Richards supported, I have no kindness to express.

Garth Hudson, the last surviving founding member of The Band, dead at 87
The Windsor-born multi-instrumentalist was part of the Canadian contingent of the famous band.

By Nick Krewen

The last surviving founding member of The Band has died.

Keyboardist and saxophonist Garth Hudson, perhaps best known for his powerful and memorable Lowrey organ intro for the classic Band song “Chest Fever,” passed away peacefully in his sleep this morning at a nursing home in Woodstock, New York, Hudson’s estate executor confirmed to the Star.

He was 87.

Born in Windsor and raised in London, Ont., Hudson was recruited by Ronnie Hawkins and Levon Helm in 1961 to join Levon and The Hawks, the forerunner of The Band.

He was part of the Canadian contingent of the group that included guitarist Robbie Robertson, bass player Rick Danko and keyboardist/singer Richard Manuel, a musical collective that joined Bob Dylan in 1965 and went on to forge their own identity with such influential albums as “Music From The Big Pink” and “The Band.”

The Band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

Dick Button, American figure skating legend, dies at 95

Button won gold medals for the United States at the 1948 and 1952 Winter Olympics, who landed the first double Axel jump and the first triple jump, and the first forward camel spin in figure skating history. Following a stint in law school, and a brief career as a professional in the Ice Capades, Button turned his attention to television, where he became a famed commentator and analyst for figure skating broadcasts on the Wide World of Sports and other network broadcasts for 46 years.

(And for those with a puerile curiosity... yes, he was.)

I assumed so, but that had nothing to do with his talent as a skating commentator.

Mort Künstler, hailed as America's most prominent historical artist, dies at 97

https://www.newsday.com/long-island/obituaries/mort-kunstler-obituary-jm3ll82b

Paywalled article but everybody has seen his Civil War artwork at Walmart.

Interestingly, he started out producing VERY racy pulp magazine cover artwork in the 1950s.

Stage and film actor Tony Roberts, who often starred in Woody Allen movies, dies at 85
By  MARK KENNEDY
Updated 9:23 PM EST, February 7, 2025
Quote
NEW YORK (AP) — Tony Roberts, a versatile, Tony Award-nominated theater performer at home in both plays and musicals and who appeared in several Woody Allen movies — often as Allen’s best friend — has died. He was 85.

Roberts’ death was announced to The New York Times by his daughter, Nicole Burley.

Roberts had a genial stage personality perfect for musical comedy and he originated roles in such diverse Broadway musicals as “How Now, Dow Jones” (1967); “Sugar” (1972), an adaptation of the movie “Some Like It Hot,” and “Victor/Victoria” (1995), in which he co-starred with Julie Andrews when she returned to Broadway in the stage version of her popular film. He also was in the campy, roller-disco “Xanadu” in 2007 and “The Royal Family” in 2009.  ...
Associated Press

Besides the Woody Allen movies, I remember him from a particular episode of "Law & Order," where his character's wife is caught having an affair with a much younger man. She tells Roberts that she's sick of "your hair plugs, Viagra and old man smell."  He really wasn't that old!

If you can find photos of her pre-surgery, she was very pretty.

What evil, money-loving “doctor” would agree to perform surgery after surgery after surgery? Hippocratic oath anyone?

The same doctors that are willing to mutilate the sexual organs of children in order to fulfill a false political agenda.

Jerry Butler, legendary R&B singer-songwriter from the 1960s, dies at 85

Butler had a long collaboration with Curtis Mayfield, and the two were members of the late 1950s group The Impressions. Both with the Impressions and as a solo artist, Butler struck hits such as "For Your Precious Love," "He Will Break Your Heart" (a top-10 hit that made it to number one when Tony Orlando covered it and retitled it "He Don't Love You"), "Only the Strong Survive" and "Ain't Understanding Mellow." He co-wrote "I've Been Loving You Too Long" for Otis Redding.

In later life, Butler joined the Chicago political machine, serving as a Democratic politician in Cook County, Illinois. He died of Parkinson's disease February 20.
