Because the more features built in the higher the likelihood of failure. I don’t buy appliances with all he bells and whistles, that way there is a good chance I can repair it myself if there is a failure.

The problem is all the efficient coolants that didn't take high pressures to function were outlawed.

Generally, I have found that the less computerized an appliance is, the more reliable it is, long term. Neither my washer nor dryer have microprocessors running them, only basic thermal limiters on the dryer. No icemaker or plumbing in the fridge. they keep chugging along, although I have replaced the thermal limiters ($20 on Amazon for the set), the timer, and the wheels the drum turns on in the dryer (It's about 35 years old). Basic tools and a multimeter and youtube...

True story...When I bought a new fridge about 15 years ago, I gave my old one to a friend. He put it in his garage as an "extra". I've had to replace my fridge 3 times in 15 years. My friend called me last week to tell me I might want to come to the funeral...the fridge I gave him finally died. I bought that fridge in 1981! Guess I should have kept it.lol

You can never really buy it as a thing that you own and control. You are in a perpetual partnership with the manufacturer.

Why anyone would agree to this kind of a deal is confusing to me. Not a single chance in hell that I would sign up for this.
