Map shows US states where 'damaging' Arctic blast will hit first - and more to come

A chilling Arctic blast is set to sweep across the US today, with forecasters warning of 'record-breaking' cold weather to follow. The Northern Plains residents will be the first to experience the sub-zero Fahrenheit temperatures this week.

However, these freezing conditions are expected to spread into Central, Southern, and Eastern parts of the country during the first half of January, according to AccuWeather. Experts suggest that at the 'pit' of the cold plunge, temperatures could fall 'far below the historic averages' for some states, potentially leading to 'damaging and disruptive' conditions for millions of Americans.
 
Homeowners in the affected states have been warned they may face higher heating costs when the 'Arctic Express' kicks in. Travellers are also being advised to make contingency plans in case their journeys are disrupted by the icy conditions.

Polar vortex, arctic river, artic blast, Canadian express, give it any name you want, it's called winter.

I’m sitting here with the A/C running, wrapped up in an electric blanket.  One can never be too sure.  Be safe out there.

They're talking only -4F here one night in the Florida of Iowa. I think it got down to almost -20F for a couple nights last year, so  :shrug:

A blast of Arctic air will send temperatures dropping across the Eastern U.S. this week — and the frigid weather could linger longer and expose millions to a prolonged and dangerous bout of winter weather.

“We’re going to be stuck in a cooler pattern,” said Zachary Yack, a National Weather Service meteorologist based in Chicago. “It will definitely go into the middle and early part of next week.”
 
The Arctic outbreak has already sent temperatures tumbling in the Northern Plains states. Forecasters predicted Minneapolis’ high temperature would be 20 degrees for Thursday and drop to 12 degrees on Saturday. 

In Chicago, high temperatures were expected to hover in the low 20s for the next week. Forecasters in both cities are expecting overnight temperatures to drop into the single digits.

We will be getting a long stretch of cold weather with night temps in the 40's and daytime highs reaching mid 60's. We won't warm up into the 70's until around the beginning of February.  I'm not looking forward to this at all.   **nononono*
