Massachusetts has added more immigrants per capita than any other state other than Florida over the last four years.
Massachusetts has added more than 255,000 immigrants since 2020, according to newly released Census data, the latest indication of the state’s reliance on foreign newcomers as the country prepares for a second Trump administration’s increased hostility to immigration.
That amount dwarfs the 18,000 people added through births compared to deaths, and more than makes up for the 163,000 residents lost who moved to other states.
The data provides some key takeaways.
Among states, only Florida added immigrants as a bigger share of its population. Florida also gains a lot of U.S. residents who move from other states, while Massachusetts has typically relied on immigrants to make up for those moving to other states.
