Net zero tyranny robs drivers and homeowners of freedom of choice
Opinion by Letters to the Editor • 11h

SIR – Through its relentless and reckless pursuit of net zero, this Government is effectively destroying our freedom of choice about how we heat our homes and what type of car we wish to drive (“Best-selling hybrids to be banned from 2030 under net zero crackdown”, report, December 24).

Furthermore, heat pumps and EVs remain controversial as regards their practicality and efficiency. A stand needs to be made against this tyranny.

Peter Rosie

Ringwood, Hampshire

SIR – It is already evident that there will not be enough of key materials, such as lithium, to produce the billions of EVs required worldwide. At the current rate of mining, it would take more than 100 years to make enough batteries to meet current global demand for cars.

In the UK, even if only half of the planned roadside charging points are in use, they could add as much as 30 gigawatts to grid maximum demand. To that must be added the loads of heat pumps, electric cookers and showers, and immersion heaters, plus a few data centres and 1.5 million new houses, with similar loads.
