After the USS Gettysburg Misfire, Can We Talk About TWA 800?

On Sunday, December 22, a US Navy guided-missile cruiser, the USS Gettysburg, mistakenly shot down an American fighter jet over the Red Sea. This was not the first incident of friendly fire by the U.S. Navy, nor the most tragic.

On Sunday morning, July 3, 1988, at the tail end of the Iran-Iraq War, an Aegis cruiser in the Persian Gulf, the USS Vincennes, fired two Standard Missiles at a commercial Iranian Airbus, IR 655. Captain Will Rogers III and his crew had mistaken the ascending passenger jet with 290 people on board for a descending Iranian F-14, a fighter plane.

Stuff happens. Mistakes are made. Although not eager to share the truth, the U.S. Navy eventually had to fess up under media pressure. Four years after the Vincennes incident, in July 1992, Newsweek teamed up with ABC News’s “Nightline” to produce an exhaustive exposé on the accidental shootdown and its subsequent cover-up. They called it “Sea of Lies.”

There were naval exercises being conducted south of the Flight 800 flight path when the incident occurred.

There is no way the US government would admit any missile, much less one of ours was involved. Recall, the investigation was hijacked from the NTSB, the CIA came up with a crtooon which was used to establish the narrative, even though it did not fit the testimony of eyewitnesses, and those who witnessed 'something' heading up to the plane before the explosion and breakup were NOT interviewed for the record. Tags delineating which of the three debris fields individual pieces of wreckage were recovered from were changed, and where those bits were recovered paints the picture of the plane's demise. Journalists who obtained pieces of fabric from the plane which tested positive for PETN were prosecuted, even as the tale was concocted about using the plane to test bomb sniffing dogs was concocted. While such tests may have occurred, the preflight prep time for the aircraft would have overlapped the alleged time of the canine training considerably and the tail number of the aircraft the training was allegedly carried out on was not recorded. 

This, was not the first suspension of disbelief by the news media, however, even as it settled on the center fuel tank narrative. The 'investigation of the Alfred E Murrah Building bombing/explosion in Oklahoma City required the belief that ANFO had brisance far greater than the 40% of TNT it possesses, and that that shockwave did not follow an inverse cube force relationship, in order to demolish the support column near the daycare in the building. I wont even mention the Mt. Carmel Massacre at Waco, Texas, which would leave any real investigative journalist with a hat full of 'why' for every alleged answer.

We've been lied to for a long time, and people buy it because that is far more comfortable than the nasty truth.

Like Nicholson's character said: "You want the truth? You can't handle the truth!"

But maybe it's time we did. Open up the rest of the files on the JFK assassination, and we'll start there.

There's an interesting fictional account of Flight 800 by Nelson DeMille, the novel "Night Fall." A couple out fooling around on a Long Island beach that evening happen to videotape the missile and ensuing crash. Gubmint mucketymucks don't want anyone discovering the truth of what happened.

IIRC, there were over a hundred people who saw something bright (some describing it as leaving a smoke trail) go up before the aircraft came down.
(Also IIRC) none was interviewed as part of the investigation (on the record).
