Per the video in this post, https://www.gopbriefingroom.com/index.php/topic,542783.msg3117545.html#msg3117545 , it appears that there had been a Ukrainian drone attack in the area, and the Russian SAM system and/or operator may have mistaken the passenger plane for one of the drones.

As more details over Azerbaijan Airlines crash emerge, pilots and crew are hailed as heroes

 Captain Igor Kshnyakin, co-pilot Aleksandr Kalyaninov and purser Hokuma Aliyeva lost their lives in the crash landing, while the other two flight attendants, Zulfugar Asadov and Aidan Rahimli, reportedly survived and were being treated in hospital on Thursday.

As harrowing details emerge of the last moments of Azerbaijan Airlines Flight 8432, which crashed on Wednesday in Aktau, the flight crew who did their best to save the passengers until the last moment are being hailed as heroes.

Azerbaijan Airlines published the names of the five crew members, identifying Igor Kshnyakin and Aleksandr Kalyaninov as pilots and Hokuma Aliyeva, Zulfugar Asadov and Aydan Rahimli as flight attendants.

According to the airline, the Embraer 190 aircraft carried 37 Azerbaijani citizens, six from Kazakhstan, three from Kyrgyzstan, and 16 Russian nationals.

A total of 29 passengers survived the crash, while 38 perished as the pilots attempted to make an emergency landing near the Kazakh city of Aktau.

Azerbaijani government sources have exclusively confirmed to Euronews on Thursday that a Russian surface-to-air missile caused the crash.

According to the sources, the missile was fired at Flight 8432 during drone air activity above Grozny, and the shrapnel hit the passengers and cabin crew as it exploded next to the aircraft mid-flight.

Government sources have told Euronews that the damaged aircraft was not allowed to land at any Russian airports despite the pilots’ requests for an emergency landing, and it was ordered to fly across the Caspian Sea towards Aktau in Kazakhstan.

According to data, the plane’s GPS navigation systems were jammed throughout the flight path above the sea.

They absolutely are heroes!  And no thanks to the idiot Russians who 1) hit them with the SAM and then 2) made them fly clear across the Caspian Sea with a severely damaged aircraft filled with passengers to try and land in Aktau!

Grozny is in Chechnya, Russia, so the SAM that hit the plane started the whole disaster (contrary to what I posted in the Ukraine War thread), not a bird strike as initially reported. Russia still has some 'spainin' it should, but probably won't, do:

* How in Hades did its SAM system and operators mistake an airliner for a drone?!

* Why in Hades require a damaged airliner to land some 250 miles (estimated from GoogMaps) away from the SAM hit?!

* Why in Hades was the airliner's navigation system jammed (the whole area was jammed, not just the plane, but why make the stricken airliner pilots' task more difficult?)?! The jamming couldn't be shut down for the half hour or so it would take the plane to fly across the Caspian Sea to Aktau?!

The only benefit to the additional 250 miles is to burn off fuel. Less of a fire upon impact.

The crash/attempted landing reminds me of United Airlines Flight 232 which had experienced a full loss of hydraulics, and crash landed at Sioux City, Iowa,  steered by use of throttle controls. 184 of 296 on board survived. From image afterwards of the tail section of the Azerbaijan Airline aircraft, the tail was peppered with shrapnel, and may have had a similar control deficit (no/limited rudder and elevator response. )

As in the Sioux City crash landing, the pilots did a commendable job trying to save the aircraft, and it is because of their efforts that any survived.

Small holes in the aft fuselage, horizontal stabilizer and Vertical Fin are strong indicators of flechette damage from an exploded missile.  With these control surfaces likely inoperable the plane would likely drop just like it did.
