Nissan and Honda to Integrate, Eventually Merge

TOKYO, Dec 23 (Reuters) - Honda (7267.T) and Nissan (7201.T) are in talks to merge by 2026, they said on Monday, a historic pivot for Japan's auto industry that underlines the threat Chinese EV makers now pose to the world's long-dominant legacy car makers.
The tie-up would create the world's third-largest auto group by vehicle sales after Toyota (7203.T) and Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE).
It would also give the two companies scale and a chance to share resources in the face of intense competition from Tesla (TSLA.O) and more nimble Chinese rivals, such as BYD.

There have been so many auto manufacturer mergers and bankruptcies that new cars are all starting to look alike!

This doesn't make any sense to me.

Honda remains a relatively strong automaker.

Nissan is weak, partly in their decision to abandon ICE cars and move towards EV's.

What could possibly be "in this" from Honda's viewpoint?

If there is to be any winner from this merger, it's probably going to be... Toyota.

Yup.  And that's the only vehicle I buy anymore because they are as solid as tanks and the company stands behind them.

My understanding - weak though it may be - is that this is essentially a bailout of Nissan, with Honda taking the lead on it.
