NASA has yet to make an official statement on the matter, leaving people to wonder whether the digital age will be able to withstand the fury of the Sun.

As the Sun approaches its Solar Maximum in the coming years, the world finds itself on edge, wondering how the heightened solar activity will affect Earth’s infrastructure. With predictions pointing to this peak in solar cycles hitting in 2025, many are concerned about the possibility of a global “internet apocalypse.”

During the Solar Maximum, the Sun experiences a surge in solar activity, including powerful solar flares, coronal mass ejections, and heightened magnetic field disturbances. Historically, these events have led to disruptions on Earth, from damaging power grids to interfering with communication systems. The Carrington Event of 1859, one of the most intense solar storms ever recorded, caused telegraph systems to spark, resulting in operators being electrocuted. The 1989 solar storm wreaked havoc on the power grid in Quebec, leaving the city in the dark for hours.

However, as the solar storm of 2025 looms, experts are focusing on a new potential casualty: the global internet. “We’ve never experienced one of the extreme case events, and we don’t know how our infrastructure would respond to it,” said Sangeetha Abdu Jyothi, a computer science professor at the University of California at Irvine, in a recent interview with The Washington Post.

Remember when they said: "turn your computer off before Midnight 12/31/1999"   Yeah, me too.

You don’t become cooler with age but you do care progressively less about being cool, which is the only true way to actually be cool.
