Americans (Mostly) Like Trump’s Idea Of Replacing Income Tax With Tariffs: I&I/TIPP Poll
Terry Jones
December 23, 2024

Soon-to-be President Donald Trump has talked about getting rid of the U.S. income tax and replacing it with a system of tariffs. He has come under heavy criticism from Democrats and many economists. But average Americans appear to like the idea, with a plurality favoring Trump’s idea, the latest I&I/TIPP Poll shows.

The December online I&I/TIPP Poll asked 1,441 adults across the country the following question: “President Trump has talked about replacing the income tax with tariffs (taxes on selected imports). Would you support or oppose such a move?” The poll has a margin error of +/-2.6 percentage points.

A plurality of those responding answered yes. Specifically, 46% said they either support the idea “strongly” (17%) or “somewhat” (28%). On the other side, 38% said they opposed the idea either “strongly” (24%) or “somewhat” (14%). A sizeable 16% said they were not sure.

But by far the strongest support for the idea came from Trump’s main constituency, Republicans. They support the tariff idea by a hefty 75%, with only 13% standing opposed and 12% “not sure.”

Democrats aren’t so keen on the tariff idea, with 24% supporting and a majority 62% opposing the idea, with 14% not sure.

I watch youtube videos of people on Tik Tok and such and I think people of all colors and creeds are more than willing than ever to "burn down the system" so things like this resonate and why people like milieu are so popular. People are in an anti-status quo mode and they're angry. i don't blame them.

If this were France in the late 18th century and I were royalty I'd be really worried.

  • Dems-greatest existential threat to USA republic!
Congress has lied to the A tipping hat!!erican people for well over a century now regarding the Federal Income Tax, started at 1%, climbing to 90%+ and dropping back down into the 30s%.  57% of the American people pay zero dollars in income tax.

A rather large percent of Americans have a cash income and pay little to no taxes.  A friend of my wife was making the same amount as she was and not paying one dime in any taxes while also being on Obamacare, and paying a 420 per month premium for full  federally provided healthcare, while living in a $750,000 home and driving a BMW.  My wife, a physician, paid all the taxes expected which reduced her net income to the same level of her friend, and yet her health premiums were thousands more per year than her friend.  Her taxes tens of thousands more than her friend.

There are literally tens of millions of folks that pay no taxes, live in nice homes, drive the nicest cars, wear the nicest clothes, have the latest and great in electronic toys, cell phones that are $1,400 each new, etc.  And nothing in taxes, while the working stiffs continue to pay through the nose.

We need to end INCOME TAX COMPLETELY and replace it with a CONSUMPTION TAX.  Tariffs are NOT the answer.  Trump is once again blowing smoke or what I refer to as his empty rhetoric.  We are a consumer nation, and it would be nice if Congress did something right for once.  But again, don't hold your breath.

I am still waiting for him to end the H1-b Visa Program, which he INCREASED months into his 1st term, and has once again promises tech billionaires to increase again.  More USA white collar citizens unemployed from their high paid jobs being replaced by low cost foreigners, almost exclusively from India.

Here's a prediction: Trump makes a lot of noise over the next 4 years, GOPers are forced to defend him constantly, and nothing substantial changes. 2028: business as usual.

Most likely going to be the case.
