The Reason Black Rice Is Also Called 'Forbidden Rice'

From short grain to long grain options, arborio to wild to jasmine, there's a massive variety of rice on the market today, including the intriguingly nicknamed "forbidden rice."

According to MasterClass, black rice received its moniker of "forbidden rice" in ancient China where it was only allowed to be consumed by the aristocracy. The designation of the grain as a royals-only ingredient was also intended to ensure a long, healthy life for the Chinese emperor (via The Spruce Eats). This was taken so seriously that anyone caught eating black rice without permission could be sentenced to death (per Blackrice.com).

However, Blackrice.com says there may have been a few exceptions when the grain was offered to others within the emperor's court, including consorts. After all, it's considered an aphrodisiac for a reason! Even Italians know the grain by the name "Venus Rice," after the goddess of love (via Icoloniali).

Another component in its coveted status? Black rice is also more challenging to grow than other varieties of rice because a single harvest yields only about 10 percent of what other rice harvests do.

Muy delicioso
This is not like any rice you are used to. It is not like brown or white rice. It has a deep rich earthy flavor. While tasting it, had to stop myself. I could have eaten the whole bowl as a meal just by itself.

Cooked it in a rice cooker with a standard 2 cups water to 1 cup rice, little salt/a little butter. It turned out to be perfect. It came out very loose with each grain distinguishable from the rest, and just ever so slightly al-dente.

I have always regarded rice as a kind of bread. Black rice tasted more like beans than rice, to me. Plump and hearty. Having said that, it will complement any meat dish. Not sure how it will taste with gravy? With butter/salt, it has its own flavor.

Would make a fantastic rice-a-roni.

Would not pair it with fish or seafood dishes ... white rice only for me.

Overall, it is very good rice and supposedly it is very healthy. Surprise your guests or family with something unique and yummy. Tell them you burned the rice while serving as a joke.

Would certainly recommend. It's good stuff.

Black rice... Never seen it in the store. Wouldn't mind trying it if I can find some.

I don't like brown rice at all. Period. I dunno, maybe it was an early Uncle Ben's experience or something. Can't stand it.

My favorite is white with wild rice and quinoa mixed in - Though I seldom do wild rice because of the extra time it takes. I have found wild rice in a packet lately, already cooked, so it is easy to throw into a white rice pot at the end.

And 'm a weirdo in the prep. I like to fry my rice before cooking. It gets a different texture that I prefer.

Start with a quarter yellow onion and a quarter green or red pepper chopped fine. Just enough olive oil to cover the bottom of the pot, medium heat.

Let the veggies cook until the onion turns opaque. Throw in two cloves of garlic, mashed and chopped fine. Throw in the rinsed rice at the same time. Stir often till the rice just starts to brown. Or, alternatively, till it stops crackling, which is about the same time.

Then I add half the liquid in chicken or beef stock, and half the liquid in water, let it come to a rolling boil. final stir, cover, turn down the heat to a high simmer, and leave it be for 15-17 minutes.

Stir in spices after it's done.

According to the backstory, this stuff is so healthy in so many ways it was reserved only for the Emperor.

Everyone has a different taste configuration. To me, brown rice tastes like oatmeal. I don't use it.

But yes, Black rice will make a great 'rice meal' cooked in some kind of stock and then add fried onions, peppers, mushrooms,  fried spaghetti pieces whatever else you want to throw in.

Another rice staple around here is what I call red beans and rice, but would be pretty foreign to y'all in the South... Well it's the same, except crossed with maybe cajun dirty rice... with hamburger or sausage, celery, onion, red pepper, jalapeno, and black beans thrown in there too.

It's at it's best left over in the fridge..I dunno, it does something to the blend of flavor... But roll out a tortilla, throw on some of that with some pepper jack, toss it in the nuke a minute, and you have yourself a pretty nice start to any burrito.
