Controversial "puberty blockers" are set to be "indefinitely" banned in the UK, the Department for Health and Social Care has said.
Wes Streeting's department announced that the treatments - clinical trials aside - will be outlawed for under-18s across the whole country, just hours after they were permanently banned in Northern Ireland to avoid a “back door” supply loophole.
Earlier on Wednesday, Stormont is understood to have voted unanimously to solidify a temporary ban on the drugs to keep it in line with the rest of the UK.
The decision is understood to have been triggered by fears about Northern Ireland becoming a “back door” for puberty blockers to be distributed across Britain.
Activists had planned to use Northern Ireland as a gateway to England, Scotland and Wales, where the drugs are permanently banned. ...
