China using Mariana Islands to get US birthright citizenship for children, lawmaker warns

Wisconsin GOP Rep. Tom Tiffany said during an interview with the "Just the News, No Noise" TV show that many Chinese nationals come to the Mariana Islands, and have children there in order to get them U.S. birthright citizenship and thus abuse the system.

Birthright citizenship is a much discussed topic in the media as some Republicans have toyed with the idea of getting rid of it, arguing that it was never constitutional. Congressman Tom Tiffany, R-Wis., earlier this week criticized a loophole that Chinese nationals are reportedly using to get U.S. citizenship through a U.S. territory.
 
"Under an Obama-era policy, Chinese nationals can visit the U.S. territory of the Northern Mariana Islands without a visa," Tiffany wrote on the social media platform, X. "Chinese women visit the islands to deliver their babies who automatically become U.S. citizens."

According to reports, there is a policy that was implemented under the Obama administration that allowed Chinese nationals to visit the northern Mariana Islands without a Visa.

Tiffany said during a Thursday interview with the "Just the News, No Noise" TV show that many Chinese nationals come to the Mariana Islands, have children in order to get them birthright citizenship and abuse the system. "We call it birth tourism," he said. "There are more children being born to Chinese nationals than there are to native people of the Marianas. And that tells you everything you need to know."

I don't have a much of an issue with birthplace citizenship as I do the anchor baby policies.  There is a (debatable) Constitutional provision for the former.  There is no such provision for the latter.  Even assuming that a baby born on US soil is granted citizenship, that does NOT mean that baby's illegal parents get to stay.  Those parents are still subject to prosecution, incarceration, and deportation.  Hope they have a guardian already picked out.

And if they plead out, choosing instant deportation over prosecution, they can take their US citizen baby back to where ever they came from.  That baby can then grow up in East BF, enjoying all the non-existent benefits of being a US citizen on foreign soil.  And when that kid starts working, they can set up wire transfers with their local bank to pay their US tax obligations directly to the US Treasury.

And if they fail to file taxes, then they will then be subject to federal prosecution for tax evasion just as the rest of us US citizens are subject to.  That's the law.  No free passes.  Equal protection for all.
