Biden admin locks in deal for federal employees to work from home through Trump presidency
December 4, 2024 | Chris Donaldson

Post-election efforts to erect roadblocks to change before President-elect Donald J. Trump takes over are underway with tens of thousands of federal employees getting their work-from-home privilege extended through the end of the incoming administration.

A Biden administration official just agreed to an updated contract with a powerful union that locks in telework through 2029, complicating efforts to reform government waste by requiring federal workers to return to the office.

On Tuesday, Bloomberg reported that the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) reached a deal with the Social Security Administration (SSA) to protect the employees from being forced to actually show up to collect a government paycheck.

Those positions can still be eliminated.  One can be unemployed-from-home as well as work-from-home.

Break the contract and let them strike if they don't like it.

Then fire them as Reagan did to air traffic controllers.

Then intensely scrutinize any who seek to have their old positions back.

(contract with a powerful union) An executive order(10988) by Kennedy allowed government workers to unionize.  Couldn't Trump rescind that order?

NEW: Only 6% of federal employees work from an office full-time, and a third are fully remote. And some aren’t actually working when they “work from home,” a Senate investigation found.

“Just three percent of the federal workforce teleworked daily prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, six percent of workers report in-person on a full-time basis, while nearly one-third are entirely remote,” the report states.

Government office buildings have an occupancy rate of only 12%, yet the government spends $16 billion a year to operate them. Even the head of the General Services Administration, which manages federal real estate, works from home in Missouri.

Office buildings are so empty that the water supply at the office of the Environmental Protection Agency — which is tasked with ensuring clean drinking water — was left stagnant for so long that it developed dangerous bacteria, according to the audit. But unions have demanded that full individual workstations for each employee be maintained for the rare occasions they are used, in addition to demanding that members be allowed to work from home.

Not without following appropriate procedures

The pandemic has been over since 2022.
It's well beyond time to go back to work.
Only 6% of federal workers are full time and in person.
Any private company would fire employees who refused to show up to their job — why should we be wasting YOUR tax dollars on a workforce who refuses to show up?

Could be that those positions aren't needed. In office or remotely.

A sorta-related personal experience.

My sister is going on Medicare soon, but also Medicaid.
To help her out, I thought I'd go down to the local Social Security office in town, to get some information.

The SS office is in the same building the IRS is in.

I noticed when I pulled into the lot, there weren't a lot of cars parked. It had been a few years since I last stopped there, I remember that lot being near-full all the time.

I walked in the front door.
There are two guards standing there - one in front of the IRS office, the other in front of the SS office.

Can I go in the office? No.
Does one have to make an appointment? No -- NO appointments.
How do you talk to anyone? Over the phone.

Being the dumbest member of the forum, it took me a few days before I realized:
Could the guards actually be standing outside of empty offices?
To prevent you from going in and discovering that fact?

Hmmm...
One of the first things I'd advise Mr. Trump to do:
Order these employees BACK TO WORK in the office.
Order them to conduct face-to-face business again with the public that they were hired to "serve"...

So we don't need 94% of the federal employees.

Sure looks that way to me.

So we don't need 94% of the federal employees.
And these same people are not needed nor wanted by private industry, either.

The sledgehammer is about to strike on the bloodsucker of taxpayers ' $.

But they're not working from home.  They're at home not working.

I suspect many have side jobs, since there's no oversight of their federal jobs.
