In a shock offensive, insurgents breach Syria’s largest city for the first time since 2016

BEIRUT (AP) — Insurgents breached Syria’s largest city Friday and clashed with government forces for the first time since 2016, according to a war monitor and fighters, in a surprise attack that sent residents fleeing and added fresh uncertainty to a region reeling from multiple wars.

The advance on Aleppo followed a shock offensive launched by insurgents Wednesday, as thousands of fighters swept through villages and towns in Syria’s northwestern countryside. Residents fled neighborhoods on the city’s edge because of missiles and gunfire, according to witnesses in Aleppo. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the country’s unresolved civil war, said dozens of fighters from both sides were killed.

The attack injected new violence into a region experiencing dual wars in Gaza and Lebanon involving Israel, and other conflicts, including the Syrian civil war that began in 2011.

Aleppo has not been attacked by opposition forces since they were ousted from eastern neighborhoods in 2016 following a grueling military campaign in which Syrian government forces were backed by Russia, Iran and its allied groups.

I asked this question earlier this year when US forces in Syria and Iraq were getting shelled with 81mm mortars - the same caliber of mortars that we left behind in Afghanistan.  (Soviets use 82mm mortars).

Iran is fighting for Shi'a hegemony in the Middle East.

On November 27, jihadist terror groups -- led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (Organization for the Liberation of the Levant; HTS) -- launched a coordinated attack on Aleppo Governorate in northwestern Syria, cut off the main highway from Damascus to Aleppo, captured and killed dozens of Syrian Army soldiers, promised mass executions and beheadings "in front of TV cameras," and seized control of a military base and several villages.

The city of Aleppo is now effectively under the control of jihadist groups. Tens of thousands of Christians, Kurds and other minorities are in danger of extermination. Videos of jihadists abducting Kurdish women have also surfaced on social media.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, part of an alliance of terrorist groups active in Syria and with links to the Islamic State (ISIS) and Al-Qaeda, was formerly known as Jabhat al-Nusra, and served as Al-Qaeda's affiliate in Syria.

Although the first urgent priority of the civilized world should be to eliminate these jihadists, the next goal should be to ensure a democratic federal state, or autonomous regions in parts of Syria that would be ruled and defended by Kurds, Christians and Yazidis together.

“If the enemy attacks us and wants to take Syria or Khuzestan, the priority is that we keep Syria. Because if we keep Syria, we can also take back Khuzestan. But if we lose Syria, we cannot even keep Tehran.”
This statement, published by the state-controlled Asr-e Iran website, highlights the centrality of Syria in Tehran’s regional strategy.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and his allies have long touted the concepts of the “Shia Crescent” and “Strategic Depth” as cornerstones of their foreign policy. However, these ambitions face unprecedented challenges due to mounting international and domestic pressures on Bashar al-Assad’s government, threatening the foundation of Tehran’s influence in the region.

Don't know about this one.  Assad was reported to have landed in Tehran, but did anyone actually see him there?  Also, why would he contact the UAE for US help, promising to cut ties with Iran, if he was in Iran at the time?  Let's just say 'whereabouts unknown'.

One hundred years ago, in May 1916, an English diplomat named Robert Sykes and a French counterpart, François Georges-Picot, carved up the Middle East into spheres of influence for their countries in the event that the British and French and their allies defeated the Ottoman Empire, which was allied with Germany and Austria-Hungary in the First World War.

It became known as a Sykes-Picot Agreement, although it was supposed to remain secret, and it laid the groundwork for the borders that would later define Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel and the kingdoms of the Arabian peninsula.

Damascenes awoke on Sunday to find the end of Bashar al-Assad’s rule in Syria, marking an end to over a half-century of governing by a ruler with that surname.

Opposition forces arrived shortly before dawn in Umayyad Square, the city center. After a steady trickle in the early hours, a flood of supporters emerged, celebrating and vandalizing symbols of the Assad regime. Dozens of videos showed Assad posters being defaced, statues toppled, and government buildings raided.
