  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.
I liked that scene....

But there are more dangerous jobs.
Safety programs since the 1980s have reduced fatal accidents in the oil patch to where it isn't even on the top ten list.

By fatality rate:
1. Fishing and Hunting Workers
Fatal injury rate: 132.1 per 100,000 workers.

2. Logging Workers
Fatal injury rate: 91.7 per 100,000 workers.

3. Roofers
Fatal injury rate: 47 per 100,000 workers.

4. Construction Workers
Fatal injury rate: 43.3 per 100,000 workers.

5. Aircraft pilots and Flight Engineers
Fatal injury rate: 34.3 per 100,000 workers.

6. Refuse Waste and Recyclable Material Collectors
Fatal injury rate: 33.1 per 100,000 workers.

7. Structural Iron and Steel Workers
Fatal injury rate: 32.5 per 100,000 workers.

8. Delivery and Truck Drivers
Fatal injury rate: 25.8 per 100,000 workers.

9. Underground Mining Machine Operators

How God must weep at humans' folly! Stand fast! God knows what he is doing!
Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

In his defense, besides hyperbole, he may have been referring to all accidents.

Oil workers were up at number 3 when I started in the patch. So, yes, we have made that much progress in not killing each other off through stupidity, carelessness, or using junk to do the job. Driving truck remains dangerous, but that is often a function of driver experience and road conditions.
