Trump Picks Big Donor with Background in Finance and Little Experience with the Military for Navy Secretary

John Phelan is President-elect Donald Trump's pick for secretary of the Navy, the first service leadership position that the incoming administration has announced as it prepares to put its stamp on the military.

In a post to his social media site, Truth Social, Trump said that he is naming Phelan, a financier who appears to have no military experience or experience working on military policy and has never worked for a large defense contractor, to lead the Navy.

Seems to me the navy hasn't been doing well in getting value for our dollars.

Perhaps someone who can handle money and get an ROI will do better.

Being a military insider hasn't made the LCS go, or the Ford or Nimitz class vessels an improvement for the money spent.

(We need to quit engineering systems for combat to be finely tuned. They need to be robust, functional, and capable of taking a punch in the event that all the gee whiz stuff can't prevent that.)

Anybody ever see a similar remark like this when Granholm was picked as Energy Secretary having zero experience in energy, or Buttplug picked for Transportation Sec having zero experience in transportation,  or any of the myriad of other losers picked by Biden to run departments?

And being in academia is NOT having experience. Universities are safe havens from the real world outside.

Well, having experience in defense spending means you are already an insider. If you want a fresh look at all this, you need someone who isn't in the club.

Navy secretary faces Hatch Act violation for comments on Biden

Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro violated the Hatch Act for statements voicing support for President Joe Biden during a work trip to the United Kingdom in January, according to the U.S. Office of Special Counsel.

While civilian Defense Department employees like Del Toro are permitted to publicly back political candidates in a personal capacity, the Hatch Act bars federal officials from participating in political activities while serving in their official capacity and in their federal workplace.

The Office of Special Counsel said Thursday that Del Toro breached this policy during several interviews representing the Defense Department to garner backing for Operation Prosperity Guardian, a U.S. and international mission to safeguard shipping vessels in the Red Sea, the Bab al-Mandeb, and Gulf of Aden.

“When speaking in his official capacity on a taxpayer-funded trip, Secretary Del Toro encouraged electoral support for one candidate over another in the upcoming presidential election,” Special Counsel Hampton Dellinger said in a statement Thursday. “By doing so, he crossed a legal line and violated the Hatch Act.”  .  .  .

Yep.  SECNAV should ideally be an administrator and not a strategist.  And James Forrestal was a finance guy too but Roosevelt appointed him in 1940 (as Navy Undersecretary) to reform and rebuild the Navy for World War II, and then named him SECNAV in 1944 to finish the job against the Axis.
