Democrat Pitches Secession Where New York, 3 More States Would Join Canada to Resist Donald Trump

Nick Gilbertson
28 Nov 2024

A Democrat state lawmaker in New York is calling for a coalition of northeast states to secede from the Union and join Canada because President-elect Donald Trump is returning to the White House.

State Sen. Liz Krueger (D-28), who is also floating a scheme to withhold upwards of $300 billion in federal taxes, defended her ideas in a conversation with Politico.

“It’s not unreasonable to think outside of the box,” Kreuger, chairwoman of the Senate Finance Committee, told the outlet.

In September, Kreuger spoke with City and State New York.com about a four-state secession from the union if Trump won, where New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Connecticut would join Canada:

I know that Canada has basically said, “Yeah, we’re not letting you all in if he wins.” As individuals, they basically made it clear. But that’s why I thought, “Oh, why do I have to leave this country? I love this country, and if Trump wins a second term, it’s not actually my fault or people in New York.” So I thought I would suggest to Canada that instead of us all trying to illegally cross the border at night without them noticing, which is pretty hard because there’s a lot of us, that they should instead agree to let us be the southeast province, a new province of Canada, and I offered, even though I hadn’t gotten agreement from other states yet, that I thought New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, would combine and be a great new province as the southeast province of Canada.

“Basically everybody in these states are progressive Democrats” and they “would fit in pretty well with the political philosophy of at least most of the Canadian elected officials,” she contended.

Set the precedent, and the rest of us will go our separate ways as well.

Nice way to cement a permanent GOP majority.

And the wall on New York's border will be taller than that on the Rio Grande, not to keep people out of the US but to keep them in the hellhole they will create in New York.

Why not include the western 1/3rd of Oregon, Washington,  California and Minnesota?

If the election had gone the other way I would have been all for separation. We don't have to stay together.

Not actually true for NY.  NY is a mostly just-to-the-right-of-center dog that gets wagged consistently to the left by the counties of Albany, NYC, and LI.

It doesn't have to be violent. Countries change boundaries without going to war.

  • Didn't vote for McCain Dole Romney Trump !
Well a trade for a good portion of the rural area of Canada might be a great trade-off. We could drain off the liberals in the rest of the Northeast into their territory.... and take a few Canadians/Northern NYers that would cherish the freedoms we offer.

Yeah, the Yankees burned Atlanta in the interest of maintaining the "union".

Considering Atlanta was a cultural and industrial hub, that suggests any disagreement over pending departure should be met with similar measures.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

That dissolution didn't have to be violent either.
When in the course of human events..., and all that.
It's just that one side wasn't willing to let go, and invaded the other, grossly underestimating how serious the folks who wanted to leave were about defending their own turf.

I think we'd miss the boat, though, if some concessions were not made to the United States they wish to depart from (like, find another name, for starters). I mean $eriou$ conce$$ion$. And be very picky about any media they would be able to broadcast here.

West half of Hudson's Bay (Manitoba) to the west border of ALberta would be good. Two provinces farm, potash and other mining, and oil production in Saskatchewan (northern part of the Williston Basin) and Alberta...further north, uranium.

No, Canada can't have all of New York.  Only the blue parts.

If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."     -Ayn Rand-

Burn NYC to the ground.  Problem solved.
