Every four days in port for almost two years I stood an internal security watch on the carrier I was aboard.  We looked for drug use, bad guys, and whatever else might cause problems.  I, and the guy that went with me, could prowl anywhere we wanted. I will assure you it was boring duty.  To liven it up a bit, I made it a goal to locate some space on the ship I had never been to, and, in two years, I never failed.  These are BIG ships.

Even the not especially large, by WW2 standards, USS Yorktown and USS Enterprise demonstrated that a carrier is not easy to sink, and sometimes mission-killing a carrier for a significant time period is not easy. Yorktown took bomb hits, at Coral Sea and Midway and was able to continue operating somewhat. It took several hits by torpedoes - air and submarine - to finally sink her. Enterprise got hit by bombs on multiple occasions, but was not put out of operation totally until mid 1945.

Modern carriers are on the order of 5 times USS Enterprise's (CV-6) size, and their anti-torpedo and anti-air defenses are vastly better.

While a Seaman I was on starboard lookout one day off the coast of Hatteras.  I reported an Island bearing 090.  Captain made a quick check of the charts and went out on the bridge wing spotted my "island."  Captain went down to CIC and found the radar operator sound asleep.  He came up and patted me on the back and told me it was a carrier.  That's just how big those things are.  That was in the 60's, today they're even bigger.

Guided missile (hypersonic?) tipped with a small nuke.

You don't even have to "hit" it.

Just come within 1/3-1/2 mile.

I wouldn't want to be on that carrier when it happens.
