Gaetz says he won’t come back to Congress

.

Former Rep. Matt Gaetz said he is not planning on returning to his seat in the House of Representatives next year, clearing up some speculation about his future without answering all the questions.

President-elect Donald Trump nominated him for attorney general last week, but he withdrew his name from consideration on Thursday. Without a job in the Trump administration, it was not clear if Gaetz was going to try to remain in government or if he had other plans. Roughly 24 hours later, the former congressman said he had no plans of walking back into the House.

“I do not intend to join the 119th Congress,” Gaetz told Charlie Kirk on a podcast. “There are a number of fantastic Floridians who stepped up to run for my seat. … Eight years is probably enough time in the United States Congress.”

Gaetz won reelection in 2024 but will give up his seat to make way for a special election in an area that is safely Republican. “I’m still going to be in the fight, but it’s gonna be from a new perch,” Gaetz said. “… I’ve got some other goals in life that I’m eager to pursue with my wife and my family.

“I’m going to be fighting for President Trump. I’m going to be doing whatever he asks of me.”

DeSantis sets special election for Gaetz seat

by Julia Manchester - 11/22/24 4:13 PM ET

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) on Friday formally set a special election date to fill former Rep. Matt Gaetz’s (R-Fla.) vacant House seat in Florida’s first congressional district.

The primary election for the district is slated to take place on Jan. 28, 2025 and the district’s general election will take place on April 1, 2025.

“At Governor Ron DeSantis’ direction, this Special Election is being conducted as quickly as statutorily possible,” Florida secretary of state Cord Byrd said in a statement. “We are committed to ensuring this election is held as soon as we are allowed to hold it by state law.”

The district is one of the most conservative congressional districts in the state. Gaetz sailed to reelection earlier this month, carrying 66 percent of the vote.

This whole Gaetz episode seems pretty darn odd. There has to be much more going on than is apparent.

What’s next for Gaetz’s House seat after former Trump attorney general nominee declines to reclaim it

.

Florida Republicans are lining up for the special election to fill former Rep. Matt Gaetz‘s seat after the former attorney general nominee announced he would not seek to reclaim it.

So far, six Republicans have launched campaigns for the special election to represent Florida’s 1st District in the 119th Congress, which would begin on Jan. 3, 2025. The next representative, however, will not take office until the spring, putting a strain on House Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-LA) slim House majority.

The Florida secretary of state office released the schedule for the 1st District’s special election on Friday, with the primary set for Jan. 28 and the general election set for April 1. The winner of the special election would likely be sworn into office soon after that.

The most recent Republican to enter the special election race is state Rep. Joel Rudman, who said in a press release Friday that he is running to succeed Gaetz and would pledge his “unwavering commitment” to Trump’s agenda.

More poor planning on the part of Team Trump.  Gaetz should not have resigned his seat until and unless he was confirmed.

??? I have a feeling that this was planned to get Gaetz out of Congress as 'talks' of bringing him up on charges were still circulating.  In listening to Gaetz earlier he still said he was going to play some sort of role just not one that was front and center and not a Congressional role.

If that were the case, why didn’t he just resign?   Occams Razor says this was poor planning by Team Trump; something they demonstrated in spades the last time around.

Whether or not you like Trump is up to you.  I'm glad that he beat Harris and some of his picks have been most excellent. At least now I can see a slight glimmer of light in our Republic's future.

Resigning when rumors once again started to swirl would make him look guilty. Trump's appointment gave him and excuse to resign and he then resigned again in order to allow Trump's transition to go more smoothly.  It was a win-win situation.

IOW let's give the leftists the least amount of ammunition possible.

Wow.  Paranoid delusion much?   I voted for Trump, despite the fact that I live in a liberal state where my vote doesn’t count as a practical matter.

I simply prefer to see things as they are, and Team Trump is, once again, beginning to display the same sort of shoot first/think second behavior that watered down so much of their efforts last time.  Remember the appointment of Scaramuchi?

What's the real story behind Matt Gaetz, the 17-year-old girl, events of 2021, and the investigation? This person on X lays it out in a lengthy but very interesting thread. I do not presume to affirm its accuracy; I simply do not know.

Trump made many mistakes in his first term and had a super majority that I believe he wasted.  However, rather than dwell on his past mistakes, I give him credit for being able to rise to victory over what seemed like unbeatable odds. I'm standing in his corner as a newly-elected President and once again giving him the benefit of the doubt. I am thankful that Harris is not our president and the GOP has a majority in both Houses.

I don't see that as being paranoid nor delusional at all and I certainly don't pretend to have all the answers.

Gaetz did right in stepping down....I think he's always been sort of a wild card and I believe there's more to his story and Trump probably did him a favor by giving him an opportunity to get out of Congress.
