Urgent warning in three states after 'bomb cyclone' is expected to create 'life-threating' hurricane conditions

An urgent weather warning has been issued for three West Coast states after a bomb cyclone is expected to unleash hurricane conditions in the region.

The National Weather Service (NWS) alerted residents in northern California, Oregon and Washington to potential hurricane-force winds, catastrophic flooding and feet of high-elevation snowfall this week.

Meteorologist Ryan Maue said that the central pressure of this bomb cyclone will fall almost 70 millibars in 24 hours, reaching pressure levels similar to that of a Category 4 hurricane.

This super-charged storm will bring wind gusts of up to 70 miles per hour, and pull a Category 5 atmospheric river onto land that will dump up to 20 inches of rain in certain areas.

An atmospheric river is a long and narrow region of the atmosphere that carries warmth and moisture from the tropics toward Earth's poles. A Category 5 is exceptionally hazardous, bringing intense storm impacts to land.

Storm impacts are expected to begin Tuesday afternoon and persist through the week, possibly stretching into the weekend.

Americans living in these areas are advised to find shelter in an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and avoid cars and mobile homes.

Wind gusts “up to 70” mph is a strong tropical storm, not a cat 4 hurricane. What am I missing here.

'Bomb cyclone' maps reveal West Coast states set to endure hurricane-like conditions

Forecasters have released new maps showing impacts of the 'bomb cyclone' moving toward the West Coast, revealing which states will endure hurricane-like conditions.

The National Weather Service (NWS) alerted residents in northern California, Oregon and Washington to potential hurricane-force winds, catastrophic flooding and feet of high-elevation snowfall starting Tuesday afternoon.

The bomb cyclone, essentially a giant spinning vacuum in the atmosphere, is expected to pull a Category 5 atmospheric river onto land that 'will act like a massive firehose of rain at low elevations and a giant snow gun over the high country.'

A wind projection map showed gusts between 60 to 70 miles per hour from Eureka to Coos Bay and up the coast north of Aberdeen.

Places like Oregon's Klamath Falls, Bend and Penleton and Seattle in Washington can expected between 50- to 60-mile-per-hour winds.

A precipitation map projected rainfall could reach up to five inches in north-central and northwestern California, western Oregon and western Washington, and northeastern California may see up to 20 inches.

Meteorologist Ryan Maue said on X that the 'mega' bomb cyclone and 'climate fueled' atmospheric river will dump trillions of gallons of rain over the Northwest this week, totaling almost 20 trillion gallons.

Following days of extreme winter weather that left two women dead, forced evacuations, and knocked out power for hundreds of thousands of West Coast residents, forecasters warned Friday of more life-threatening impacts from the atmospheric river and another storm through the weekend.
 
The first round of storms broke precipitation records in California, bringing a third of Sonoma County’s yearly rainfall average and the Russian River reached a minor flood stage at the local Hacienda Bridge. San Rosa was pummeled with 6.5 inches of rain over the last 24 hours, marking its wettest day on record since 1998.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office issued evacuation orders for people living near the Eel River and flooding also closed Highway 1 in Mendocino County. Evacuation orders have been downgraded since then.

Cal Fire posted a video of its firefighters conducting a swift water rescue on a flooded roadway in northern Chico Thursday night.

This particular large storm hit the Pacific Northwest pretty hard (WA and OR). Meanwhile here in Santa Clara County at the southern end of SF Bay, we've had several very cloudy days and decent rainfall for several hours yesterday (Friday). I'm not dismissing the effects on CA's north coast or the Chico area (NNW Sierras), just giving broader context to the media hype.

"Bomb Cyclone" and "Atmospheric River" are just media and Warmista hype for normal-wet-year-weather. that I remember my Mom making tart comments when I was a child about it and town residents not doing much to mitigate the flooding.

But please... you have no idea how much I detest the Daily Mail and its desire to frame every single weather event as a disaster in the making. I would be willing to bet they don't even have a meteorologist on staff, or even on a consultancy. (Most newspapers, and the Mail is only loosely that, don't.)

I would be willing to bet they don't even have a meteorologist on staff, or even on a consultancy. (Most newspapers, and the Mail is only loosely that, don't.)

News orgs often don't show decent understanding of California size and geography, and the Island of Britain is farther from California than NYC or WashDC. California is "only" the US' third largest state, as some residents of the second largest state are wont to point out, but in area it is 78% of the area of the Island of Britain. Humboldt County to Chico is farther than between London and Manchester, and from Sonoma County to Chico is maybe 10 or 20 miles less.

My favorite visual is the fact that the boundary23 between Oregon and California is on the same latitude (42 degrees north) as the New York and Pennsylvania boundary, and very nearly the same as the boundary between Massachusetts and Connecticut/Rhode Island. So imagine from Cape Cod all the way down to Georgia, and all the differences in climate between the two, and you get some idea of California.

Having the Pacific Ocean upwind makes it quite a bit different but the general idea stands.
