Lead investigator behind seizing of P'Nut the squirrel is unmasked - as officials give an update

State investigators are probing the circumstances surrounding the death of the beloved Instagram famous P'Nut the squirrel.

The DEC is conducting an internal investigation into the controversial raid on Mark Longo's home, where both P'Nut and Fred the raccoon were seized and euthanized.

Despite Longo's claims that officers wore protective gloves, the animals were killed and decapitated for rabies testing after P'Nut allegedly bit an agent's hand.

'An internal investigation into the matter is ongoing, and we are reviewing internal policies and procedures to ensure we continue serving this core mission,' a DEC spokesperson told The New York Post on Friday.
[this is bureaucratic code for, 'we are waiting for this to go away so we can forget it']

State and local health departments, including the DEC, the state Health Department, and the Chemung County Health Department, have been tight-lipped about the rabies test results and the condition of the injured agent.

Any cornered, threatened critter with teeth will bite.
For them, it is an existential battle.
It isn't sickness, it's self-defense.
Anyone in Animal control would know that.
Besides, there are post-bite prophylactic shots for rabies you can get when it isn't known whether a critter had it or not, and what you do when the critter gets away.

it wasn't necessary to kill either of the animals to determine whether rabies was present.

So, bullshit. This was punitive.
Just mean.

This took place in a rural area south of Watkins Glen.  Those DEC employees were some kind of special to even respond to such a complaint.  So maybe they didn’t realize a squirrel would bite them if grabbed.

I think it is up to the person bit.... I know if a dog bites me the fastest way to determine rabies is to have it's head sent to Auburn to be tested... and that is what I would opt for. Putting it in a cage and watching it is not an option if I am subject to needed the shots ASAP...

That said, sorta BS to go in looking for a few pets, but what most here are not thinking is someone reported them.... so they had to go, and pet rodents are prone to just run all over new folks running in and out of pockets looking for a treat... I know, mom made a local cable install fellow scream and go crazy mad .... He asked where the cable came through the wall and mom said the porch, but to watch out for her attack squirrel, well Corky (our pet) ran all over the fellow and he flopped around like a monkey for a bit and ran out.... the other cable guy just hee-hawed and they teased him at work for months. @Smokin Joe

Dogs here are supposed to have their shots, and get a tag for their collars to show that. In lieu of that if the owner is available they should have documentation.
If not, or the dog cannot be found, the normal course of action is to have the shots just in case.
Generally, though, I agree, that is the fastest way to determine whether rabies is present. 
We do not know if anyone on the raid team was bit, either. That may just be an excuse to cover for a malicious execution.
