Justice Sonia Sotomayor Faces Renewed Calls to Retire After Trump Win

Following President-elect Donald Trump's victory, calls have resurfaced for Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor to retire to prevent Trump from potentially filling another court vacancy.

Sotomayor, who was appointed by President Barack Obama in 2009, is the first Latina and the third woman to serve on the Supreme Court. At 70, she is the oldest Democrat-appointed justice on the Court which has a 6-3 conservative supermajority.

In light of Trump winning the 2024 presidential election over Vice President Kamala Harris, calls for Sotomayor to retire so that President Joe Biden, with support from a Democrat-majority Senate, would have enough time to appoint a new justice have recirculated on social media.

Newsweek reached out to the Supreme Court's public information office via an online form for comment on Thursday.

Too late! Sorry! (I'm really not sorry.)

Why too late?

No confirmation will occur until New president and Senate are in place.

Apparently, she has health issues. The decision is entirely up to her, but some on the left have for months called for her to step down so Biden could appoint someone even more leftist. Would Biden have enough time to appoint a new Justice in the next two months, let alone get him/her confirmed?

New Records Show Supreme Court's Sonia Sotomayor Took Unusual Step Of Traveling With A Medic
Marshals Service records indicate Sotomayor was the only sitting justice to request such care. Some progressives have called in the past for her to retire while Biden is president.

Supreme Court justices have made hundreds of trips and public appearances in recent years. But only one sitting justice appears to have taken the unusual step of traveling with a medic: 69-year-old Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

The revelation comes from newly released U.S. Marshals Service records obtained by the nonpartisan court watchdog Fix the Court, which requested information about security for current and former Supreme Court justices. And it amplifies questions that many only whisper about the long-term fitness of the oldest Democratic-appointed justice on the court.

In February 2018, a medic from Grand Junction, Colorado, accompanied Sotomayor on a trip she made to southern Florida, according to the records.

On a three-day book tour with stops in Illinois and Tennessee in October of that year, the Marshals Service incurred costs for “baggage (medic),” which could refer to medical personnel or be a more benign reference to medical equipment in the justice’s luggage. Sotomayor was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 7 and gives herself insulin shots multiple times a day.

Both trips occurred after a January 2018 episode in which paramedics treated her at her home for low blood sugar. ...

The Swamp Turtle will Merrick Garland any Supreme Court nominations until Trump takes office.

She had her chance to avoid an RBG.

Turtle doesn't have the votes.  He would need every Republican plus Sinema and Manchin.

Cheeseburger Chuckie may put the ball into motion, but Dems don't have super majority that could guarantee a successful nomination.  Some are Independents that caucus with Dems who have not drunk the Dem Kool-Aid.

If there's anything Swamp Turtle does well, it's obstruct.

All they need is a simple majority, and that they currently have.  For that we can thank McConnell.  I understand why he changed the rule, but now we have to live with the long term consequences of it.

So they want to "Biden" The wise Latino?  It's hard being a member of a party that will stab your ass in the back.

Do you all realize that if she doesn't retire now, and is forced out later by health issues (as I understand, she has complications from diabetes) during Trump's term... There is the possibility that Trump could end up appointing another three justices during his second term?  Counting her, possibly Clarence Thomas (age 76), and possibly Samuel Alito (age 74).

I looked it up, six would be a record for a 2-term president, not counting Washington. Washington appointed all six members of the original Supreme Court, plus four replacements for a total of 10. Franklin Roosevelt appointed eight members over four terms, and Eisenhower, Taft, and Grant each appointed five members.

Great info @Ghost Bear I see the hand of God in all this. He isn't done with the USA.

At our church's prayer meeting on Nov. 4, my prayer was that God preserve this republic. It seems He has.

And this is why the Dems were suddenly so interested in court packing in 2022.
