Fashion Notes: Melania Trump Celebrates Husband’s Victory in Timeless Dior

First Lady Melania Trump celebrated her husband’s victory on Tuesday evening in a timeless look that harked back to her time as FLOTUS four years ago while dropping stylistic hints of what’s to come.

While attending President Donald Trump’s victory party, Melania Trump donned a gray wool Marlène double-breasted jacket from Dior with a matching skirt made from virgin wool.

The Dior skirt suit retails for about $6,600. Mrs. Trump wore similar Dior skirt suits as the first lady from 2017 through 2020, including a red Dior suit that she wore while in Paris, France, and later, at the Republican National Convention (RNC) this year.

"I like my suitcase," a 4-year-old Barron Trump said with an apparent Slovene accent in 2010 during a Larry King segment.

The video shows Barron Trump in his father’s office with both of his parents as he grabs a brown suitcase and asks his mom about going to school.

"I have to go to school now?" Barron Trump asks, again with an accent.

As is her tendency, past and future First Lady Melania Trump made an eye-catching fashion statement at Thursday’s state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter.

The bright-white, Peter Pan-style collar on Melania Trump’s black Valentino trench coat stood out, as she sat at the far end of the second row with her husband, Donald Trump, amid a sea of somber, black attire donned by the other presidential and vice presidential VIPs and their partners.

It also was immediately apparent Melania Trump’s collar featured a dramatic black and white print. Women’s Wear Daily jumped in to explain that the print depicts a couple in a passionate embrace and surrounded by roses and butterflies............

The founder of the Trumpettes support group, a close friend of the Trumps, revealed that fashion titans are “begging to dress” Melania on Inauguration Day.

As Melania Trump is on her way to starting a new career move, going back to her First Lady days, all eyes will be on her fashion picks for the Inauguration Day, especially since the last political affair fared out on a controversial note. In January 2017, the former model settled for a £5,500 powder blue cashmere dress and bolero, thanks to Ralph Lauren stepping up as one of the few designers to volunteer to create an outfit for her on a big day for the US presidency's new chapter.

This time around, a new wave has swept in. Although major fashion giants wanted to steer clear of Donald Trump’s “toxic” brand of politics years ago, countless big players in the industry are now knocking at their door so that Melania could be seen flaunting their creation on January 20. Now that the incoming first lady has “come out from under husband’s shadow,” as highlighted by David Adler, founder of Washington high society magazine Washington Dossier, she is equally playing the game in her own rights. While her final outfit choice is still “up in the air,” Toni Holt Kramer, founder of the Trumpettes support group, affirmed that her final piece “will go down in history.”

The powder-blue, pale suit dress that Melania Trump wore for her husband's first inauguration – a custom design by Ralph Lauren – drew immediate comparisons to Jackie Kennedy.

Her hair, swept up loosely into a decidedly 1960s chignon, framed a smiling face as she evoked, through fashion, a golden age of political idealism.

This time round, things were decidedly more nuanced.

Opting for a more somber note, Melania cloaked herself in a custom navy silk wool coat dress – coordinating pencil skirt and ivory silk crepe blouse – all of which, to the surprise of many fashion watchers, had been hand sewn in New York City by the niche, but far from cut-price, American designer Adam Lippes.

Melania's boater – by another American designer, Eric Javits – completed the striking ensemble.

Not since Hilary Clinton, in 1993, has a First Lady opted for an inauguration-day hat, adding not only a touch of the theatrical to Melania's ensemble but almost entirely obscuring her eyes.

For a woman known for her love of sunglasses, perhaps this was the next-best choice on a day when the entire world would be watching her.

I do like those museum exhibits when they show off old women's clothing. I know the Smithsonian has one of former First Ladies dresses, and there is one in the British Museum of dresses worn to Queen Victoria's coronation that were amazing.
