Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao and Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price have been recalled, according to results from the Alameda County Registrar of Voters.

With all precincts reporting, Thao lost in the recall election by a nearly two-to-one margin, with about 64 percent in favor and 35 percent against.

Thao, who was elected two years ago, has been beset by a series of controversies. Chief among them: an FBI raid of her home last June in connection with an ongoing federal corruption probe of the Oakland government and the city’s largest recycling contractor.

She has also been criticized for her firing of former Oakland police chief Leronne Armstrong, a surge in violent and retail crime, and failed negotiations aimed at keeping the A’s at the Oakland Coliseum.

Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price becomes the county’s first top prosecutor to be recalled. She also contended with a series of controversies, including criticism of her policy of restorative justice for offenders, AND allegations of anti-Asian racism from a former aide. ...

Voters have ousted Oakland’s mayor and the region’s progressive district attorney, in a major political shake-up for the northern California port city. It’s the first time in modern history that voters here have ousted leadership from either position.

Sheng Thao, the mayor, and Pamela Price, the district attorney for Alameda county, were both the target of recall campaigns, launched amid discontent over the city’s challenges: a spiralling housing crisis, rising costs and the departure of the city’s last remaining major league sports team.
 
But the recall campaigns particularly centered on residents’ enduring frustrations about the area’s crime rates. Like many cities in the US, Oakland experienced a surge in violent crime during the pandemic, one that took longer than elsewhere to subside. Statistics had shown both violent and non-violent crime finally trending down – before the election, the Oakland police announced a 30% drop in homicides this year compared to 2023. Non-fatal shootings were down 20% and robberies were down 24%. Still, many residents remained deeply frustrated.

Where did that comment come from? Sheng Thao was born in Stockton, CA, and Pamela Price in Dayton, OH. If you were alluding to Sheng Thao, her parents are Hmong, who fled the (literal) genocide against the Hmong in Laos and immigrated to the US. The Hmong are ethnic Miao, not ethnic Han Chinese.

As for Chinese people being in California, Chinese people started coming here in 1850 - very shortly before California became a US state - to participate in the Gold Rush. A decade later, many of the laborers who built the Central Pacific part of the US' first transcontinental railroad (including the section across the Sierras).

So, what happens now, do they do another election and hire/vote folks just as liberal (or perhaps more so)?

My understanding is that the City Council president will be the interim mayor, and there will be a special election, possibly March 2025. If Oakland follows California law for state officials, Sheng Thao will not be allowed to run for mayor.
