An Iowa resident has died after contracting a frightening viral disease, similar to Ebola, that leaves victims bleeding from their eyeballs.

The patient had returned to the U.S. from West Africa earlier this month bringing the disease know as Lassa Fever, rarely seen in the U.S., back with them, health officials said.

The person was not sick while traveling meaning the risk to fellow airline passengers is 'extremely low,' officials with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

Patients are not believed to be infectious before symptoms occur and the virus is not spread by casual contact.

The article does not mention whether the person who died was originally from West Africa or a US-born person who travelled to and from West Africa. The person was the 9th known case of Lassa Fever in the US since 1969 (when the virus was first described), which kind of demonstrates that it is not highly contagious. The disease is spread in Africa via a mouse species native to Africa and has a ~1% death toll. Per W'pedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lassa_fever#Vaccine:

If I understand the medicalese properly, the possible vaccine uses protein sub-unit technology, a vaccine technology that has been around longer than I have.

Because they didn't say it means that person was not a US citizen.

Just a reminder, the CDC is monitoring folks coming to the USA at international airports for the Marburg Virus.  It has a 70% mortality rate.
