WaPo staffer unsure paper can recover as Bezos-owned outlet sheds 200,000 subscribers over endorsement fiasco
Story by Joseph Wulfsohn • 1h

The Washington Post is reportedly paying the price with its liberal readers after the Bezos-owned paper announced it would not be making an endorsement in the 2024 presidential race, which has sent shockwaves in its newsroom.

NPR reported Monday that The Post has shed more than a whopping 200,000 subscribers since it revealed its editorial board would not formally endorse Vice President Kamala Harris after it had planned to do so.

According to NPR, it marks roughly an 8% loss of The Post's 2.5 million paid subscribers.

By means of shrewd lies, unremittingly repeated, it is possible to make people believe that heaven is hell - and hell heaven. The greater the lie, the more readily it will be believed.

The receptivity of the masses is very limited, their intelligence is small, but their power of forgetting is enormous. In consequence of these facts, all effective propaganda must be limited to a very few points and must harp on these in slogans until the last member of the public understands what you want him to understand by your slogan.

After 45 years of slandering, alienating, and shedding more conservative subscribers, the WashPost going under due to the tantrum of Prog subscribers would not sadden me.

Maybe Mr. Musk will buy it, and do a "X-style" cleanout and restructuring.

Although Bezos might shut the paper down before considering that...!

The idea of Elon buying it crossed my mind, too.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
