Could black voters win Trump the presidency?
By Shama Tobin

Kamala Harris is facing significant challenges with black voters. A New York Times/Siena College poll from early October showed 15% of Black voters supporting Trump, while 78% back Harris. A more recent report by USA Today paints an even bleaker picture: 72% of black voters support Harris, while 17% back Trump. For Democrats, dropping below 80% support from black voters nationally could be a serious blow.

This shift is not driven by misogyny, as some, including Barack Obama, have suggested, but rather by dissatisfaction with the Biden-Harris administration’s economic policies. Inflation, which has risen more than 22% between 2020 and 2024, has disproportionately affected black Americans, particularly low-income households that are already struggling with rising costs for necessities like housing, food, and transportation.

Between 2020–2024, the average rent has increased by 33.7%. With approximately 58% of black households being renters, this high increase hit them particularly hard. In 2023, over 56% of black renters were spending more than 30% of their income on housing.

The question is, will a shift in black votes harm Harris and help bring Trump back to the White House?

There used to be widely used quote and metric a few decades ago, that was something along lines of "Are you better than you were 4 years ago".

I challenge anyone in the U.S.  to claim that national financial key performance indicators are better right now (inflation adjusted) than they were in January 2021.  Money in the bank or wallet knows no partisan metric, no matter what sex, race, religion you are.

Interesting.  You would think that Kamel being a woman of color would have the Black vote all wrapped up.

My net worth was greater four years ago.  We are sacrificing now to make ends meet.

Back in the 70s, when I made a fraction of what I have made in recent years, I bought beef filets by the dozen, one pound each.  I ate like a king.  I have about one beef filet a year now, and in the restaurant, they weight 6-8 ounces.

I had multiple sports cars.  I did not want for anything then.  Now, you get used to doing without across the board.  What Biden/Harris did over the past near four years was nothing short of criminal.

Same here -- we used to enjoy Certified Black Angus Filets a couple of times a month and other cuts of steak and we had money left over each month to actually save.  Now, we've had occasion to dip into our emergency funds and we eat lots of chicken, pork and ground sirloin now.  Steaks cost a small fortune and aren't nearly as thick as they used to be. Fresh produce, fruit and eggs are ridiculous. Even canned goods are up.  Don't get me wrong, I am very thankful that we have food on our table, there are many who are finding it extremely difficult to feed their families.  This shouldn't be!

I just recently saw a chart indicating with gas, food, and other goods-- costs of things have gone up around 219%!!!  That's putting Carter's economy to shame.

Challenge any dim or liberal friend you have  to check their net worth right now, and multiply it times 0.72 (conservative estimate)   Then compare that number to what their net worth was in January 2021.

I'd venture say 90+% of the nation is poorer than 4 years ago. Inflation Adjusted.

Nearly everyone I know was better off 4 years ago. I am currently unemployed and barely getting by.

(sigh)
Four years ago (2020) I made 1,060 in interest (savings & CDs).
This year, I'll make around 12,000 (t-bills).

I looked at what my RR retirement pay will total this year, and it's 7,300 more than it was in 2020.

Do I really have to answer the "are you better off now" question ...?

(the question doesn't work on everybody...)

Not to mention those who just have no motivation to show up.
