A normally quiet “high threat” volcano in Washington state has been rumbling at a record rate — prompting an alert from geologists who ultimately said there’s little chance it will erupt soon.

Mount Adams — a breathtaking snow-capped peak in the state’s southern region — has been struck by seven low-intensity earthquakes since September, according to the Cascades Volcano Observatory.

The number of quakes, which ranged in magnitude from 0.9 to 2.0, is highly unusual for the 12,200-foot mountain, which is generally hit by just one every two or three years.

Mount Adams is 30-50 (or more) miles from sizeable towns and cities. So "high threat" is more relative to the threat of explosion/eruption than to population centers. People living nearby should be aware, of course.

Last year on a trip down The Columbia River the wife and I came within about thirty miles of Mt. Adams. We have visited the Mt. St. Helen's site, and I was surprised to see how close it is to Mt. Adams.
The volcanologists say that it's not as dangerous as Mt. St. Helen's, but I don't think I'd want to be within thirty miles if it explodes.

It's been a couple of weeks with no further news on Mt Adams activity here in the Seattle area.    I missed St Helen's being in the Navy at the time but have hikes both mountains.

I never visited the Cascades volcanoes, but bits of St. Helens came to visit me--in North Dakota (about 1/2 inch of ash).
