Wind turbine blades continue to cause pollution problems for the people living around them. [emphasis, links added]

A farm in eastern Iowa has dust and debris from shattered wind turbine blades spread out over 240 acres, and they say the wind farm owner won’t clean it up.


Steve and Teresa Weets, according to The Gazette, agreed in 2012 to an easement allowing Acciona Wind Power to install two turbines on their family farm near Mechanicsville, Iowa. Both turbines have been struck by lightning – one of them twice – over the past 18 months.

The last time it happened was on Aug. 15, and a neighbor called the family early in the morning to say: “Your wind turbine’s on fire again.”

Vineyard Wind and its turbine manufacturer GE Vernova have begun retrieving the debris that sank to the sea floor following the blade failure  at the wind farm southwest of Nantucket three months ago.

On Sunday, Nantucket Select Board chair Brooke Mohr was informed by GE Vernova that the recovery effort had begun that morning, with multiple vessels involved including one deployed to recover smaller fragments of debris that may break off during the retrieval process.

The work is being conducted by the salvage company Resolve Marine, which was founded by Nantucket summer resident Joe Farrell.

During a previous survey by a sonar vessel in late August, GE Vernova discovered debris in 15 different locations on the sea floor within 150 meters of the turbine, according to Roger Martella, GE Vernova's chief sustainability officer and head of government affairs. The water depth around the turbine is approximately 150 feet. ...

I haven't heard any updates on what caused the fires up here that burned nearly 90,000 acres of prairie and breaks. They happened during a period of high winds (officially 40 MPH  sustained with gusts to 73 MPH)  and the two largest fires burned for over 20 miles before being brought under control. There are wind farms in the vicinity of the burned areas.

Maybe through the grapevine, but the local paper is owned by Gannet, so not there. There is a startup small flyer sized free paper called the Williston Graphic, and they had the best print coverage of the fires, a sizeable thank you to the first responders (mostly volunteer firefighters), 21 fire departments from ND and Eastern MT, along with Highway Dept. DOT, Oilfield water haulers and other private individuals and industry and the Electric co-op.
