Kamala Harris’s Plagiarism Problem
The vice president appears to have airlifted sections of her book, Smart on Crime.

Quote
Kamala Harris has become famous, in part, for her unique rhetorical style. She switches freely between various accents and peppers her speeches with catchphrases: pondering falling “out of a coconut tree,” discussing “the significance of the passage of time,” and moving the nation toward “what can be, unburdened by what has been.”

To her supporters, the vice president’s rhetorical flourishes represent the values of compassion and optimism. To her detractors, her reliance on platitudes and tautologies demonstrates her unfitness for the presidency.

But, as we have discovered in this exclusive report, another element appears to exist within Kamala Harris’s rhetorical universe: plagiarism.

At the beginning of Harris’s political career, in the run-up to her campaign to serve as California’s attorney general, she and co-author Joan O’C Hamilton published a small volume, entitled Smart on Crime: A Career Prosecutor’s Plan to Make Us Safer. The book helped to establish her credibility on criminal-justice issues.

However, according to Stefan Weber, a famed Austrian “plagiarism hunter” who has taken down politicians in the German-speaking world, Harris’s book contains more than a dozen “vicious plagiarism fragments.” Some of the passages he highlighted appear to contain minor transgressions—reproducing small sections of text; insufficient paraphrasing—but others seem to reflect more serious infractions, similar in severity to those found in Harvard president Claudine Gay’s doctoral thesis. (Harris did not respond to a request for comment.) ...

Kamala Harris accused of plagiarism in co-authored 2009 book on criminal reform
By Steven Nelson

New York Post

Vice President Kamala Harris is facing allegations of plagiarism after numerous passages from the Democratic presidential nominee’s 2009 book “Smart on Crime” were discovered to closely resemble — or perfectly match — wording from other sources.

Harris, then San Francisco’s district attorney, wrote the book promoting a reform-minded approach to prosecuting crimes alongside ghostwriter Joan O’C. Hamilton — who told The Post when contacted Monday that she was surprised to learn about the alleged copying.

Conservative activist Christopher Rufo published the allegations Monday and credited an investigation by Austrian “plagiarism hunter” Stefan Weber — with Rufo posting screenshots on X of five examples in which the wording in the book closely resembles other sources. ...

The five side-by-side passages indicate that Harris may have lifted wording from an Associated Press article from 2008, a Wikipedia article as drafted in 2008, a Bureau of Justice Assistance report from 2000, an Urban Institute report from 2004, and a John Jay College of Criminal Justice press release describing a 2007 award.

In at least two of the instances, the source of the original verbiage is cited in footnotes — however, quotation marks are not around the apparently copied words and in other instances passages appear to be wholly uncredited, such as the Urban Institute report. ...

Nolte – Famed ‘Plagiarism Hunter’ Busts Kamala Harris Book: ‘Copied Virtually an Entire Wikipedia Article,’ ‘Fabricated a Source Reference’

John Nolte 14 Oct 2024

Dr. Stefan Weber, an internationally famous “plagiarism hunter,” has discovered that Kamala Harris “plagiarized at least a dozen sections of her criminal justice book, Smart on Crime,” Christopher Rufo reports.

The 2009 work of non-fiction, co-authored with Joan O’C Hamilton was, per Wikipedia, “[f]irst published as Harris (then the San Francisco district attorney) was beginning her 2010 campaign for California Attorney General” and “outlines her vision of how the criminal justice system should function.“

In his summary of findings, Dr. Weber writes, “Kamala Harris copied virtually an entire Wikipedia article into her book without providing attribution to Wikipedia.”

Most damning is that “Harris fabricated a source reference, inventing a nonexistent page number,” he said.

You can read the full report here.

Rufo provides further plagiarism examples that are jaw-dropping:

Vance accuses Harris of plagiarizing her 2009 book: ‘I wrote my own book, unlike Kamala Harris’

From Ross O'Keefe

Vance is accusing Harris of plagiarizing her 2009 book Smart on Crime.

“Hi, I’m JD Vance. I wrote my own book, unlike Kamala Harris, who copied hers from Wikipedia,” Vance posted on X, linking a Medium article titled, “Kamala Harris’s Plagiarism Problem.”

Vance then mocked “corporate media ‘fact checkers.'”

“Cue the corporate media ‘fact checkers’: ‘Vance’s tweet is missing important context,” he said. “‘Kamala Harris only copied some of her book from Wikipedia.'”

Vance previously posted on X, “Lmao Kamala didn’t even write her own book,” in a response to a thread from Christopher F. Rufo comparing sections of text from Harris’s book to other sources.

The hits keep coming.  Although she cited the source, she copied long stretches of verbatim language, without paraphrasing or putting it in quotations:

Which begs the question…  Who were they counting on buying her book if they didn’t think it would be read?
My guess:  Schools and counties that would buy a large number of copies knowing their patrons would have no interest.
Sounds kind of like laundering taxpayers’ money to me.

‘OH NO, MORE!’ Kamala’s plagiarism much worse than NYT wants you to believe
October 16, 2024 | Sierra Marlee

Vice President Kamala Harris’s plagiarism scandal continues to grow despite left-wing media’s best attempts to shut it down.

Christopher Rufo, who originally broke the story that portions of Kamala’s book “Smart on Crime” had been lifted from sources like Wikipedia, has kept the receipts coming. This blows apart attempts to downplay the seriousness of the reported plagiarism, as was seen from the New York Times.

“This is the eighth instance of significant plagiarism by Kamala Harris,” Rufo posted on X. “Although she cited the source, she copied long stretches of verbatim language, without paraphrasing or putting it in quotations. This is what they teach you not to do in high school.”

Hoo Boy: 'To Be Clear, That Is Plagiarism'—NY Times Expert Revises Analysis of Kamala's Book Scandal
Bob Hoge

It hasn't been a good couple of days for Kamala Harris. On Wednesday night, she appeared on a widely panned Fox News interview with Bret Baier where she seemed defensive, evasive and combative. Meanwhile, Christopher Rufo, who describes himself as a “Writer, filmmaker, activist,” busted her for plagiarizing portions of her 2009 book "Smart on Crime," which she co-authored.

The lamestream media mostly ignored the story—because Orange Man Bad and Extremist Progressive Good—but the New York Times dutifully trotted out an expert who said, meh, no big deal. First, they said, “Conservative Activist Seizes on Passages From Harris Book," then they quote the expert as claiming, “The lapses were not that serious," then they basically called Rufo a racist for pointing out Harris' cheating ways.

Is Kamala Harris a plagiarist?
by Jonathan Turley, opinion contributor - 10/16/24 11:30 AM ET

Quote
“I wrote my own book, unlike Kamala Harris, who copied hers from Wikipedia.” That criticism, from vice presidential candidate Sen. JD Vance, was only the latest salvo in what has become known as the “the Plagiarism War.”

Like virtually every aspect of our lives, plagiarism has become politics by another means. It is hardly new. President Joe Biden admitted to plagiarism long ago. The seriousness of the allegation often depends on how sympathetic the media is toward the author.

Vice President Kamala Harris was accused of plagiarizing her 2009 book, “Smart on Crime: A Career Prosecutor’s Plan to Make Us Safer.” Immediately, the New York Times ran a column citing a “plagiarism consultant” named Jonathan Bailey who suggested that, while Harris plagiarized from sources like Wikipedia, it was nothing to “make a big deal of it.” ...

The fact is, an opponent of Trump could probably copy “War and Peace” word-for-word and would still be showered with literary awards in this political environment.  ...

Harris’s alleged plagiarism is unlikely to change many minds in this election. She could have begun her book with “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,” and it would have been at least poignant, if plagiarized.
