I've noticed in recent weeks that the record highs and lows for my area, as mentioned by the local TV meteorologist, all seem to have come at least 70 years ago - pre-SUV.
Plus ça change, and all that. There's nothing new under the sun.
Record lows here and in a town I worked in in Wyoming have been changed. In the early '80s here it hit (officially) -54 (not wind chill, that's air temperature) and the Weather service announced it. Where I was working, a lady in that small town with a 'spirit' (alcohol) thermometer read -60 F. In Wyoming, almost a decade later in Riverton, the temperature got down to an official weather service temp of -54 F.
The reason 54 below zero is worthy of note is that is the temperature where mercury solidifies (freezes) .
I went back through the temperatures to check the exact dates, and found that in both instances, the temperature had been 'adjusted' to the mid -40s.
The data has been corrupted by those seeking warmer average temperatures (the high+the low)/2. There comes a point where the highs cannot be 'adjusted' upward, but to bring up the average, the lows can. The roughly 7 degree adjustments would give an average increase of 3.5 degrees F, or just under two degrees C, which is exactly what they want.
This isn't science, it's PA counting votes in 2020.
