Tony Dokoupil irked colleagues by grilling Ta-Nehisi Coates about Israel

CBS News reportedly forced Jewish anchor Tony Dokoupil to meet with the network’s in-house Race and Culture Unit after a group of employees complained he was too tough on a pro-Palestinian author.

The saga began last week when Dokoupil interviewed author Ta-Nehisi Coates about his book, "The Message," which describes in part his travels "to Palestine, where he sees with devastating clarity how easily we are misled by nationalist narratives." The CBS News anchor irked liberal colleagues by bluntly stating that it read like something you would find in "the backpack of an extremist," and pressing Coates on whether he believes Israel has the right to exist.

The New York Times reported that "a group of CBS News employees approached executives with their concerns about Mr. Dokoupil’s handling of the interview," and Dokoupil had to meet with both the CBS News standards and practices team and the Race and Culture Unit. ...

... But the fallout over the sin of Dokoupil’s questions continued on Tuesday morning during a meeting for the morning show staff.

Originally, CBS News had invited a self-described “mental health expert, DEI strategist, and trauma trainer” named Dr. Donald Grant to moderate a conversation on the issue in an all-staff meeting on Tuesday. That plan was scrapped after old social media posts from Dr. Grant surfaced—including one where he referred to South Carolina senator Tim Scott as “Uncle Tim” (a reference to “Uncle Tom”) and another of him describing a possible second Trump term as “MAGAcide” and the “death of a nation.” Seems like just the guy you should call when you want to smooth things over. (A source close to the drama told The Free Press that the network was “humiliated by his Instagram.”)

The meeting went ahead without Grant—staffers were not able to join from outside of CBS offices in order to prevent leaks. One source familiar with the proceedings suggested it was a “shit show,” with various employees “yelling.” Shawna Thomas, the show’s executive producer, was in tears. So was Dokoupil.

There was an open debate in the meeting about whether it is “fair to talk about whether Israel should exist at all.” There are some people at CBS who think that “Israel’s existence as a state should be part of fair conversation,” said one CBS source.

Can you imagine journalists having that conversation about any other country?   ...
The Fallout at CBS Continues; Shari Redstone—controlling shareholder of CBS’s parent company—is unhappy that journalist Tony Dokoupil was scolded for properly interviewing Ta-Nehisi Coates..

From @Telegraph by @KaufmanDavidNYC:

“Any notion that the debate about Israel in the aftermath of the horrors of the Hamas massacre could not get any more morally twisted was dispelled on Monday afternoon when CBS – America’s legendary “Tiffany Network” – admonished one of its leading morning news anchors for daring to do his job.

“The anchor, Tony Dokoupil, was reportedly brow-beaten by his bosses for allegedly showing bias during an interview last week with author Ta-Nehisi Coates. Dokoupil, who is white and Jewish, challenged some of the claims within Coates’ new book, The Message, part of which focuses on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

“Coates’ proffers two conceits in The Message – the first, that Israel is a segregationist apartheid state, perhaps the most racialised and racist nation to exist today. “I don’t think I ever, in my life, felt the glare of racism burn stranger and more intense than in Israel,” he writes. In his view, Israel’s treatment of Palestinians within its territorial control is akin to the cruelty of America’s Jim Crow South.

“Coates’ second launching point is equally spurious: that he has a right – if not an obligation – to expose Israel’s supposed evils because he is African-American, because he and the Palestinians somehow bear a shared history as “conquered people”.

“The problem, as Dokoupil tried to highlight, is that charges of Israeli “apartheid” are both contested and highly-politicised, demanding a level of historical fluency and intellectual sophistication far beyond Coates’ pay grade. Prior to the ten days he spent in Israel and the West Bank last year, the author had never stepped foot in the Middle East. (He’s apparently never been to South Africa, either – curious, considering all that apartheid talk).

“It was within this charged and chaotic context that Dokoupil did the unthinkable: he asked Coates to actually defend his views. Unthinkable not because the anchor’s questions – while pointed – were particularly out of line. “Why leave out that Israel is surrounded by countries that want to eliminate it?,” Dokoupil asked in one instance. Harsher, sure, was his assertion that Coates’ book “would not be out of place in the backpack of an extremist” owing to its omission of any talk of Palestinian terror or accountability.

“No, the entire Coates-Dokoupil debate boils down to optics, in other words race. Coates is black, Dokoupil is white – and within the racialised hierarchy that has legitimised Coates, any challenge, particularly around race or identity, cannot be tolerated. It’s the same system that prevents serious engagement with, say, Kamala Harris’ background – where she is described as African-American despite the fact that neither of her parents are. If a person of colour speaks about colour (any colour), they must always be right – facts and data points be damned (and I write this as a person of colour).“

I'm sorry, but all these euphemistically-named thought control and censorship entities just smack of a certain earlier time (90 or so years ago), don't they?

“The Race & Culture unit… determined that while Dokoupil’s questions & intentions were acceptable, his tone was not… The Standards & Practices division… determined that Dokoupil had not followed the preproduction process where questions are run through Race & Culture

CBS News anchor Tony Dokoupil defiantly admitted in a Tuesday staff meeting that he openly violated the network’s standards and practices during his explosive interview on Palestine with award-winning author Ta-Nehisi Coates, sources familiar with the matter told Zeteo.

The morning-show meeting, however, was dramatically cut short when a CBS spokesperson passed ‘CBS Mornings’ executive producer Shawna Thomas a note urging her to quickly wrap it up. Sources said that it was believed that it was due to the possibility that someone was leaking details at that moment.

Network employees said that prior to Tuesday’s meeting being torpedoed, Dokoupil was confronted by one staffer who said his comments during the Sept. 30 segment with Coates were “racist, xenophobic, and Islamophobic.” While the anchor remained respectful and calm during the charged meeting and apologized for making others “feel uncomfortable,” he fully defended the way he conducted the interview.

At the same time, Dokoupil was pressed by staffers in the Tuesday meeting on how he would handle an interview with a Palestinian guest. Asserting that he would treat it the same way as his conversation with Coates, the anchor said he’d ask the guest about their politics and whether they agreed that Israel has a right to exist.

(snip)

Meanwhile, morale continues to sink at CBS News over how this has all played out, especially with Tuesday’s meeting falling apart quickly, which left Thomas – who oversaw the meeting – in tears.

(snip)

Even before Coates was all but accused of being an antisemitic terrorist by Dokoupil last week, the CBS anchor had raised eyebrows at the network over the past year with his overt editorializing, especially regarding topics involving Israel and Gaza.

“If Tony would just shut the bleep up, none of this would be happening,” one CBS insider told Zeteo.

Will CBS make Armenian journalists make nice with Turk guests?

Tolerance should not have to mean accepting the genocide of your people to get a "good" interview.

Maybe, CBS should let Canadians, eh, interview Palestinian Arab guests.  They're known to be polite and non-confrontation people ... except when the Canucks lose the 2011 Stanely Cup to the Bruins.

Everybody gotta hate somebody.

This is a recipe for how to kill a news division.
''Dokoupil was coached on his 'tone of voice, phrasing and body language' in his interview with Coates in a meeting with members of the network’s standards and practices team as well as its Race and Culture Unit."

Interviewing by committee doesn't work.
(What is the reporter, then, just a face or actor delivering the committee's agreed upon questions with the right 'body language,' 'intent,' and 'tone'?)
The racist practice of viewing everything thru the lens of race doesn't work. It serves to fuel racism.

Scoundrels like Coates are treated as Holy Men of Wisdom by woke libs. At least publicly.
I'll bet that there's more than a few prominent libs who'd like to punt Coates into the middle of the Pacific Ocean and let him try to swim to land.
Decades ago S.I. Hayakawa said that liberals will gleefully accept any utterances from angry blacks as wisdom.
There are blacks like Thomas Sowell who are great Americans. Then there are people like Coates who foul everything they touch and deserve ignominy.
