Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) was a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday night as the Harris-Walz ticket begins its media blitz with about a month left before the 2024 presidential election.
Walz and the show’s host, Jimmy Kimmel, discussed various topics, including Walz’s past as a social studies teacher, his campaign, and the recent debate against Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), the running mate for former President Donald Trump. Kimmel and Walz made multiple snide remarks about Trump and Vance, including the often-discussed Jan. 6 riots.
After beginning with an acknowledgment of the tragic Oct. 7 Hamas terrorist attacks and discussion about Walz’s experience as a teacher, Kimmel pivoted to the debate, particularly the part when Vance was asked if he believed Trump won the 2020 presidential election.
“That seemed to be the biggest moment of the debate, when you talked to J.D. Vance and you asked him, ‘Do you believe Donald Trump won the election?’ and he wouldn’t answer,” Kimmel said.
“That should have been the lead, don’t you think? 85 minutes before,” Walz said.
Kimmel then quipped about Trump’s former vice president, Mike Pence, and the Jan. 6 riots.
“Yeah, it’s crazy, although you have to remember the last vice president who said he thought Trump lost the election wound up being chased out of the Capitol building,” Kimmel said.
Walz talked about moving on from the past and then made an awkward comment suggesting something quite different from what the Minnesota governor intended.
“We get to turn the page on that, and I plan on waking up on Nov. 6 with Madam President,” Walz said.
The audience cheered the comment, but Kimmel, noticing how Walz’s words could be interpreted, joked about the vice presidential candidate’s malapropism.
“I just want to be clear, you won’t be waking up together,” Kimmel said while laughing. “Unless you guys have gotten closer than we thought.”
“No,” Walz said while laughing. “I have a problem about not being specific with my language. Thank you for that. You’re specifically right.”
