Customer's warning after sly golf club worker added hefty tip on order without her knowing

A Kentucky woman has warned others that they should always check their receipts - after she had a run-in with a golf club worker who allegedly added a 20 percent tip to her bill without telling her.

Jenna Simpson visited Keene Trace Golf Club on August 27 and got two fountain sodas at a restaurant within the golf course called Champions Bar & Grill.

A receipt she showed on her now viral TikTok video revealed the drinks by themselves cost $5.66. However, when she saw the server swipe her credit card off to the side, the total somehow ballooned to $7.20.

Since that struck her as too much for just tax, when the server asked Simpson if she wanted a receipt, she said yes. And she discovered that the numbers didn't add up at all.

With tax, her bill should have been $6.00. But Simpson quickly realized 20 percent of that is $1.20. That would add up to exactly $7.20, making her suspicious that the server snuck in a tip for herself.

Apparently, some retailers have the ability to add a surcharge to a bill without the charge actually being printed on the bill.

I would assume that is illegal.

Also, tipping culture is completely out of control.

While I have found myself tipping at restaurants more generously since the Covid lockdowns, I still do not consider tipping for fast food proper.  If I ever tip on takeout orders at restaurants, I max out at 10%.

Agree.  I find it ridiculous to pay for a basically automated fast food order.  Best way to avoid the awkward...  "% Tip add?", is to make sure you avoid credit cards and gift cards when you go to these places.  Using cash stops that.

The hubby and I go to Panera every couple of weeks or so for lunch, and we routinely use a gift card there because they often offer 20% off on gift cards through their rewards program. Happily, the 'add a tip' screen on the payment device (BEFORE I'VE RECEIVED ANY SERVICE AT ALL) (oops, sorry for yelling ... pet peeve) does not show up if you pay with a gift card.

In general if I order food from a counter and take it away, I don't tip.  One exception.  I will tip the small independent  Food truck guys.  They are small business owners busting their asses to survive,
You don’t become cooler with age but you do care progressively less about being cool, which is the only true way to actually be cool.
