President Joe Biden defended being at Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, as Hurricane Helene left a path of destruction in its wake across the country’s Southeast.

After addressing the nation regarding what he described as a “history-making” hurricane, which has killed 115 people across six states since making landfall last Thursday, Biden was asked why neither he nor Vice President Kamala Harris was at the White House last weekend “commanding” the federal response.

“I was commanding it,” the president told reporters Monday. “I was on the phone for at least two hours yesterday and the day before as well. I command it. It’s called a telephone.”

Biden, who also told reporters he was currently suffering from a cold, returned to the White House earlier than expected Sunday amid the storm. Harris is scheduled to return to Washington, D.C., on Monday, cutting her West Coast campaign swing short.

🚨 ALERT: Shelters in West North Carolina are OVER CAPACITY and DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH FOOD and FEMA is NOWHERE TO BE FOUND.
I’m beyond infuriated. @ChrisHallWx and I were luckily able to fill the gap with hot pizzas and Gatorade, as one shelter was 30 MEALS SHORT

We’re now delivering hot pizzas to NC State Police and flood victims near Asheville, which @ChrisHallWx hauled in from 60 miles away.
This is the first hot, fresh meal these folks—INCLUDING STATE TROOPERS—have had in DAYS.
What’s going on out here is an absolute TRAVESTY. It needs to be called out all over the country.
The federal government is WORTHLESS.

I have no problem with LIEden and Kackle-a staying out of the area. Ditto Trump, BTW. They would just be in the way and divert resources from relief work. At least they would be if there were relief work underway.

FWIW, I don't think politicians should go to a devasted area right off the bat.

But laying on the beach and attending fund raisers are horrible optics.
