Desertions Surge Among Russian Troops in Occupied Kherson

On the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine’s Kherson region, incidents of desertion among Russian soldiers have significantly increased, as reported by the National Resistance Center (NRC).

According to the NRC, many soldiers are fleeing or resorting to self-inflicted injuries to avoid further involvement in military operations. In response, Russian command has deployed additional forces from the Russian National Guard (Rosgvardia) to act as blocking units tasked with locating deserters.

The NRC further highlighted that Russian forces have been quartered along the banks of the Dnipro River in vacant Ukrainian homes and commandeered dormitories. The local occupation administration has been compiling lists of properties for this purpose.

The report states that these measures reflect broader challenges faced by the Russian military in sustaining morale and maintaining discipline in temporarily occupied territories.

The NRC called on residents of the region to report the positions and movements of Russian forces  .  .

The British Army has been training Ukrainian troops in mental health first aid, it has been revealed.

Earlier this year as an extension of Op Interflex, the British-led multinational operation to train the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the British military started quietly teaching Ukrainian officers and commanders how to detect and manage signs of battle stress in their soldiers.

The Combat Stress Signposting Course (CSSC) was launched following a rise in recruits reporting trauma exposure and mental health struggles and was initiated on the request of Ukraine’s armed forces moral and psychological support department.

In September 2023, the trainees who attended Op Interflex had the highest combat experience to date at that point with 91 per cent of that training cohort having prior experience.

Figures showed that 91 per cent of them had experienced indirect fire, 69 per cent had experienced close quarters combat and 74 per cent had treated battlefield casualties.  .  .  .

Christmas in Pokrovsk was eerie. A transportation hub in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk Oblast, Pokrovsk had 60,000 residents before Russia widened its war on Ukraine in February 2022. Now very few people remain who aren’t wearing Ukrainian army uniforms.

“There is an unpleasant silence in the city ... the calm before the storm,” volunteer Denys Khrystov said in a missive translated by Estonian analyst WarTranslated on the day after the holiday.

The storm has a name: the Russian army’s 90th Guards Tank Division, the anchor of a powerful ground force made up of dozens of brigades and regiments in two field armies: perhaps 70,000 troops in all. This force is bearing down on Pokrovsk, aiming to capture the city around the start of the fourth year of the wider war.

The Ukrainian garrison in and around Pokrovsk is much smaller: perhaps fewer than a dozen brigades, each with no more than 2,000 troops. But it’s getting some critical help.  .  .  .

Aleksei Bugayev, a former member of Russia's national soccer team who played at Euro 2004, has been killed in the 34-month-old war in Ukraine, according to Russian media reports.

Ukraine has recently showcased its use of the Danish-made RQ-35 Heidrun drone, a powerful tool for reconnaissance and target identification. According to an interview with Army TV, Ukrainian forces, particularly the Aero Reconnaissance Unit of the 117th Separate Territorial Defense Brigade, have been using this drone to locate enemy positions and equipment.

The RQ-35 Heidrun, designed for low-altitude surveillance, is a small, lightweight, and silent drone that does not require a catapult for launch. Its operational range extends from 500 to 1,000 meters for reconnaissance missions, and it can reach up to 1,500 meters when used for target correction. One of its main advantages is its stealthiness, as the drone flies quietly and is difficult to detect.

The drone features a camera system that allows the operator to lock onto targets and track them, providing real-time intelligence. The drone has proven successful in various missions, including spotting tanks, fuel trucks, and other enemy assets. Over 200 successful sorties have been carried out by this particular drone, nicknamed “Zhora.”

While the drone is not immune to technical malfunctions, its reliability in gathering crucial intelligence has been praised.  .  .
