Five so-called 'refuseniks' were killed as a fire ripped through the army jail where they were being held in Yakutsk, the world’s coldest city. Reports suggest seven more were injured.

The fire broke out at around 2am with seven people admitted to hospital, officials said, although the Russian defence ministry has not said what caused the fire. The notorious facility has been the target of numerous allegations of torture after footage from the grim prison was leaked in May.

At the time of the blaze the air temperature in Yakutsk was a bone-chilling -36C. Among those being held at the detention centre were war-wounded soldiers who, after medical treatment, refused to go back to Putin's frontline in Ukraine.  .  .

Ukraine’s Armed Forces have conducted their first-ever ground attack relying exclusively on unmanned systems. The operation near the village of Lyptsi in the Kharkiv region involved ground-based unmanned vehicles (UGVs) and first-person-view (FPV) drones.

Ukrainian officials have not commented on the strike but said that Kyiv’s drones had hit a factory described as the “backbone” of Russia’s military-industrial complex because it produces fuel for missiles.

The city of Kazan also houses a new Kremlin factory that produces thousands of drones under licence from Iran, which are then fired at Ukraine.  .  .

North Korea Likely Delivered KN-15 Ballistic Missile Systems to Russia

On December 21, 2024, new information emerged suggesting that North Korea (DPRK) may have delivered KN-15 Ballistic missile systems, also known as Pukguksong-2, to Russia. This was reported by Militarnyi.

The KN-15 is a medium-range ballistic missile system, and the video in question reportedly shows a train convoy in Tyumen region, Russia. The footage reveals several cargo wagons, platforms with excavators, and ten self-propelled Koksan artillery pieces.

However, the most intriguing aspect of the footage is five tracked vehicles with cylindrical structures on top, which resemble the Pukguksong-2 missile system.

The quality of the video makes it difficult to identify the exact nature of these vehicles, but the visual similarity to known images of the Pukguksong-2, which was first test-launched by North Korea in February 2017, is striking.  .  .  .

A series of Russian missile and drone strikes have left over half a million homes without power and heat on Christmas Day, forcing the evacuation of a hospital and causing widespread damage.

The attacks targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and cities using cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and drones. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strikes as “inhuman.” Over half a million people in the Kharkiv region were left with no healing, and blackouts occurred in the capital city of Kyiv.

The strikes wounded at least six individuals in Kharkiv and killed one person in the region of Dnipropetrovsk. According to a report by The Guardian, Dnipro Mayor Dorys Filatov said on Wednesday in a statement posted on Telegram that about 65 homes are still without heat and a number of educational institutions have also been damaged.

“Unfortunately, we will have to evacuate one of the city’s hospitals again, where more than a hundred patients are staying. They will be distributed to other medical institutions in Dnipro,” Filatov said.

It appears that the bird-strike-damaged Azerbaijani airliner that crashed yesterday may have been hit while circling hoping the local fog would lift so it could land. There had been a Ukrainian drone attack in the area, and the SAM system and operators may have mistaken the airliner for a drone (Russian SAMs and operators can't discern size difference?  :shrug: ). This has to be regarded as a "Maybe", absent confirmation, but what looks like shrapnel damage in some of the wreckage shown in the video does seem to be significant.

U.S. to Send $1.25 Billion in Weapons to Ukraine, Pushing to Get Aid Out Before Biden Leaves Office

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States is expected to announce that it will send $1.25 billion in military assistance to Ukraine, U.S. officials said Friday, as the Biden administration pushes to get as much aid to Kyiv as possible before leaving office on Jan. 20.

The large package of aid includes a significant amount of munitions, including for the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems and the HAWK air defense system. It also will provide Stinger missiles and 155 mm- and 105 mm artillery rounds, officials said.

The officials, who said they expect the announcement to be made on Monday, spoke on condition of anonymity to provide details not yet made public.

The new aid comes as Russia has launched a barrage of attacks against Ukraine’s power facilities in recent days, although Ukraine has said it intercepted a significant number of the missiles and drones. Russian and Ukrainian forces are also still in a bitter battle around the Russian border region of Kursk, where Moscow has sent thousands of North Korean troops to help reclaim territory taken by Ukraine.

Earlier this month, senior defense officials acknowledged that that the Defense Department may not be able to send all of the remaining $5.6 billion in Pentagon weapons and equipment stocks passed by Congress for Ukraine before President-elect Donald Trump is sworn in.

Trump has talked about getting some type of negotiated settlement between Ukraine and Russia, and spoken about his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Many U.S. and European leaders are concerned that it might result in a poor deal for Ukraine and they worry that he won’t provide Ukraine with all the weapons funding approved by Congress.

The aid in the new package is in presidential drawdown authority, which allows the Pentagon to take weapons off the shelves and send them quickly to Ukraine. This latest assistance would reduce the remaining amount to about $4.35 billion.

Officials have said they hope that an influx of aid will help strengthen Ukraine’s hand, should Zelenskyy decide it’s time to negotiate.

The $1.25 billion here will go directly to the Dept. of Defense as a paydown of the $20 billion it just handed to Lockheed, Raytheon, and General Dynamics.  Expect Austin to transfer back to Raytheon or one of the other two, with a seven-figure bonus waiting for him.

And Ukraine comes out on the short end of the stick, with billions promised in their name, but very little delivered.  They'll continue fighting this war by fundraising on the web to purchase FPV drones from new upstart companies with no big money Defense Department ties.

Well that military assistance amounts to older weapons and ordnance from the stockpiles like the Hawk AA system, which is 1960s vintage.  The money goes back into the U.S. defense industry to order and manufacture newer stuff.  The myth that the U.S. is airlifting billions and billions in cash on pallets to Kyiv (like Obama and Biden did with the Iranians), is just that, a myth.  All that aid money goes right back into U.S. companies, while Ukraine gets the weapons and ammo.
