This will not affect me at all.  We have many local farmers markets that sell eggs, fedgies and beef that are grown and raised locally.   This could be a boon to them.

City folk.  You are own your own to suck on the gov teat for your food stuffs shortages..

Our Farmer Joe's deals with mostly local farmers and ranchers ... so hopefully things won't get too crazy. Prices are bound to continue to rise though on other goods.

Not a heck of a lot we can do otherwise other than start consuming the dehydrated food...it's time anyways.

Harold Daggett, the ILA boss who pledged to "cripple" the United States, owns a 76-foot yacht, a Bentley, and gets paid over $900,000.
He was acquitted on RICO charges after the main witness against him, mobster Lawrence Ricci, was found decomposing in a car trunk in New Jersey.

Daggett appears to have forgotten a key rule of the Cosa Nostra, and that's to keep low. The more he runs his mouth, the more material he gives investigators to run a sting on the ILA and drive the mafia out of it. (And yeah, those kinds of unions have long been havens for organized crime.)

And then... well, let's just remember what they did to Jimmy Hoffa.

Basically, there’s a group of guys called longshoremen, who unload all the stuff that comes into the country by boats (which is pretty much everything you buy, right?). The longshoremen all make more money than doctors, because their union has a legal stranglehold over the ports and their mob-connected boss is willing to cripple the American economy to get them even more money.

So when you hear longshoreman, think “boat unloading guy making shitloads of money.” The union is paranoid about automation destroying their jobs, though, since robots can unload containers 5x faster and for 1/100th the cost, and also without threatening to wreck the economy and make inflation worse one month before an election and six weeks before the holiday season.

Still with me? Good. Now pour me another glass of champagne and let’s talk about something called the Taft-Hartley Act.

No worries.... If necessary Joe will respond to supply chain disruptions.   *****rollingeyes*****

He could have used that Taft-Hartley Act and didn't.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

The White House has few good options if the port strike becomes protracted

Yahoo by Ben Werschkul

The Biden administration exerted additional pressure on port negotiators Tuesday and announced an effort to monitor for supply chain weak spots on day one of a dockworkers strike that could ripple through the US economy.

But looming large are questions around what additional steps could be needed in the weeks ahead, from directly mediating the talks to perhaps even forcing union members back to work.

"They're really having to thread the needle politically," noted Bruce Chan, Stifel transportation and logistics analyst, in a Yahoo Finance live appearance Tuesday morning, adding that his base case is for a two-week stoppage.

Whether it's shorter or longer, he added, could depend on "the willingness of the Biden administration to intervene here."

The International Longshoremen's Association union, which represents roughly 45,000 workers, began to set up picket lines just after midnight for the first time since 1977.

The US Maritime Alliance (USMX), which operates the ports and is negotiating with the union, added in a statement that "both sides have moved off their previous positions" but added that it has offered no concession on the key sticking point issue of automation at ports.

That leaves the White House weighing its options amid dwindling chances of a quick organic resolution to the complex talks.

There are two approaches the White House could take — but they come with deep downsides.

On the one side, letting the strike drag on for multiple weeks could threaten not just shortages of some perishable consumer goods but also manufacturing materials that may force the shutdown of factories and deeper economic repercussions.

Isn't toilet paper made in the U.S.? I wonder whether its availability is limited at all by the strike.

My thoughts are that people will more likely blame Biden/Harris rather than the strikers

May be wrong, but longshoremen are more identified as workers, not policymakers like the administration who, BTW, could have stopped the strike in its tracks

No, they will blame Trump.  Global Warming is his fault.  I hear he causes bunions to boot.

Port strike stalls truckers as well as deliveries

In normal times, thousands of containers are unloaded from any particular ship at now-closed U.S. seaports in Houston, Baltimore and Virginia. Each day, thousands of trucks and truck drivers pick up loads from ports and move them to warehouses and distribution centers so they can make their way to customers.

But when ports shut down, as they did Tuesday morning because of a widespread dockworkers strike, those drivers may not know what their next job will be.

Tuesday wasn’t exactly a chill day for Kyle Kristynik, president of Houston-area trucking company Jetco Delivery. When Marketplace caught up with him at around noon, he said he was “trying to figure out if it’s 5 o’clock somewhere yet.”

He worries about his drivers, he said — many of whom operate their own trucks and pick up containers from terminals at Port Houston daily.

“They’re independent contractors, a lot of them,” and they don’t get paid time off, Kristynik said. “They’re sitting without a paycheck, basically.”

The industry counts on many of these independent contractors and small business owners across the country. American Trucking Associations President Chris Spear said the vast majority of his members own fewer than 10 trucks.

“These are very small businesses that aren’t able to shift in a strike,” Spear said. “They’re going to have to wait it out. And the longer it goes, those folks are going to be really hung out to dry.” ............

Buttigieg knew well in advance the dockworkers contract was expiring. He knew well in advance the dockworker’s Union had material demands and were expecting a big payout for their work during Covid.
Mayor Pete did absolutely nothing to prepare for an obvious strike situation.
