Let’s hope this air-brained scheme never takes off.

Researchers at the University of Cambridge announced a pie-in-the-sky plan to get the aviation industry to net zero carbon emissions by 2050 — by mandating longer flight times.

Air travel isn’t harsh punishment enough these days, apparently — witness the recent American Airlines flight was rerouted to its original Dallas airport after 5 hours, or the plane that flew right into a tropical storm just days ago — now we have all that and more to potentially look forward to, but at an even slower pace.
 
The “bold measure” would slow flight speeds by a whopping 15% — adding around 50 minutes of travel time to every single journey, The Independent reported.
 
The proposal would slash fuel burn by 5 to 7% and would reduce the 4% industry contribution to overall climate change, per the research, which is being presented to the United Nations.

These cultists will never stop until they're mulched.

Operating Hours, Engine Flight Hours, and Flight Hours costs are going to skyrocket...those costs don't care about fuel consumption rates or CO2.

If the refuse to jump have a big ole black Jumpmaster stand behind them a tell them if they didn't jump he would shove his 12 inches up their rearend.   But like one paratrooper in Nam said when asked if he jumped; "A little bit at first."

Like Jimmy Carter's 55, this forces a lot more cars on the road at any given time.

Flying slower means more planes in the air at any given time as well.

Makes everything more dangerous, so they are saying ;Safety be damned'

THe problem with Carter's 55, is that it did take longer to get from point A to point B. Accidents actually increased out this way, because someone who was used to making a 600 mile drive in one day now had to be on the road for two more hours to make it. People were falling asleep at the wheel...

With that in mind, it makes no sense to speed in town. The risk profile from 30 MPH to go 10 minutes across town vs 60 MPH to get there in 5 minutes is nuts...BUT, on the interstates and on the long haul, the time saved by just 10 MPH over the limit can mean another 100 miles or more in a day's driving or just getting there a couple of hours quicker. Reduced fatigue generally translates to safer driving. Where interstates have reasonable speed limits, and being one of those busy covering distance, I have been known to make over 1000 miles in a day.
