Speaker Mike Johnson’s Spending Bill Fails After Republican Opposition

Sean Moran 18 Sep 2024

Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-LA) gambit to attach the SAVE Act to a stop-gap spending bill failed in the House on Wednesday after Republicans opposed the bill.

The six-month stop-gap spending bill, otherwise known as a continuing resolution (CR), failed 202-220.

Fourteen Republicans voted against the legislation and two voted “present,” while three Democrats voted in favor of the bill.

Johnson said during the August recess that he would attach the SAVE Act to the six-month continuing resolution. The SAVE Act would require proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections.

As Breitbart News’s Bradley Jaye reported, many corners of the House Republican Conference opposed the scheme:

Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL) publicly opposed the measure because it would allegedly have a negative impact on defense spending, with other defense hawks expected to follow his lead. A handful of members opposed pairing the SAVE Act with the spending bill. Multiple members of the House Appropriations Committee opposed the six-month length, preferring a three-month bill, which would give appropriators and Democrats the chance to pass a massive omnibus during a lame-duck session of Congress.

Conservatives also opposed a continuation of spending levels and priorities that they did not approve in the first place.

Republicans have held the House for almost two years now.  Why are they still passing continuous resolutions of Pelosi's last budget?
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

‘Surrender Caucus’: 14 Republicans Join Forces With Dems To Torpedo Mike Johnson’s Revived Spending Bill

Over a dozen Republicans voted alongside 206 Democrats Wednesday to block Speaker Mike Johnson’s revived funding just a week after he originally pulled the bill from the floor due to lack of support.

Johnson’s continuing resolution failed in the House 202-220 with 14 Republicans voting to block the funding bill. The CR was originally set to be voted on last week, but was pulled by the speaker the day of due to pushback from his Republican colleagues who cited fiscal concerns about the bill.

“There is nothing more bipartisan in this town than the appropriators and the defense contractors showing up to screw the American people,” a senior Republican aide told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “That is truly the last bipartisan effort in this town.”

Schumer to ‘step in’ with stopgap spending bill after Johnson’s failed funding strategy

.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) on Thursday will tee up a stopgap spending bill for a vote next week in a last-minute bid to avert an Oct. 1 government shutdown.

The legislative move comes the day after the Republican-led House rejected Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-LA) proposal to extend current funding levels into the next presidential administration that included a Republican proof-of-citizenship voter registration bill dubbed the SAVE Act.

The Senate taking the reins will “enable us to prevent a Trump shutdown in the event that Speaker Johnson does not work with us in a bipartisan, bicameral manner,” Schumer said.

“Now that their efforts have failed, House Republicans don’t seem to have any plan for actually keeping the government open,” Schumer said. “So, the Senate will step in.”

These are the kinds of distractions that help Kamel-uh.
