Longshoremen at key US ports threatening to strike over automation and pay

Determined to thwart the automating of their jobs, about 45,000 dockworkers along the U.S. East and Gulf Coasts are threatening to strike on Oct. 1, a move that would shut down ports that handle about half the nation’s cargo from ships.

The International Longshoremen’s Union is demanding significantly higher wages and a total ban on the automation of cranes, gates and container movements that are used in the loading or loading of freight at 36 U.S. ports. Whenever and however the dispute is resolved, it’s likely to affect how freight moves in and out of the United States for years to come.

If a strike were resolved within a few weeks, consumers probably wouldn’t notice any major shortages of retail goods. But a strike that persists for more than a month would likely cause a shortage of some consumer products, although most holiday retail goods have already arrived from overseas.

A prolonged strike would almost certainly hurt the U.S. economy. Even a brief strike would cause disruptions. Heavier vehicular traffic would be likely at key points around the country as cargo was diverted to West Coast ports, where workers belong to a different union not involved in the strike. And once the longshoremen’s union eventually returned to work, a ship backlog would likely result. For every day of a port strike, experts say it takes four to six days to clear it up.

If there is any union in this country that needs to be busted, it is this one.

Biden won't block potential port strikes on East and Gulf Coast
A potential strike by East Coast and Gulf Coast dockworkers could cost the U.S. economy $5 billion a day, J.P. Morgan found

Presidents have the authority to intervene in labor disputes that pose a threat to national security or safety under a law known as the Taft-Hartley Act, which lets the president impose an 80-day cooling-off period under which workers go back to work while negotiations continue. However, the Biden administration has signaled it doesn't plan to use that authority if the longshoremen's union goes on strike at East and Gulf Coast ports.

Biden, or actually those who are really running America into the ground, don’t feel there are enough shortages or high enough inflation so they want dock strikes to really cripple the economy. It’ll be just like during the covid lockdowns but without the covid.

I'm all in favor of this strike.  West Coast ports will be paralyzed, blocking out Chinese imports from being unloaded while ports along the Southeast will thrive with new business.  Hurray for Corpus Christi, Houston, Cameron, Pascagoula, Mobile, Tampa, Jacksonville, Savannah, and Charleston.   Thanks for the business, Dems.

Not sure how a strike of Gulf and East coast ports paralyzes the West Coast

The strike will lock down the West Coast and Northeast.  The ILA is not as prevalent down here.  Ports will remain open.  These are 'Right to tell unions to pound sand' States.

@GtHawk

My bad.  I thought these were nationwide strikes.  I see what you mean now.  Still, it won't have the effect here (in Mobile for example) that it would have in NY, Philadelphia, Baltimore, or Seattle.  The reason we have automated is precisely because we can't depend on labor terrorists.

I hate to say this but between automation and AI...human labor will become obsolete. I see their point although I don't agree. And asking for huge salary increases won't help.

It is what it is.I'm not sure how people will be able to make a living.

As someone who works in automation, it makes human labor more valuable.  Control room operators end up making more money than I do.  It is a heck of a lot safer, too.

I'm sure you know more about this than I do....but wouldn't there be fewer control room operators than there would be human "worker bees" that actually do manual labor?

Nope, because automation serves as a force multiplier.

Too many worker bees, and you are no longer competitive.  Better to have ten companies with 100 employees each operating profitably with automation than to have one company with 1000 employees go out of business because they refused to adapt.

It is also a safety and quality issue.  There is no way my plant could operate without automation.  Can you imagine having to have a field operator perched over an analog valve 24/7, following someone's radio instructions to 'open it a smidge', or 'pinch back a skosch' just to control a flow, temperature, or pressure level in an reactor holding 8,000 lbs of product?

Chipotle hires robots in California to make food to avoid paying $20 min wage

Katie Daviscourt, Seattle |  Sep 18, 2024

It's official! - Robots are replacing humans.

Chipotle restaurants in California have introduced two robots to replace human workers in an effort to slash labor costs in response to the state-mandated $20 minimum wage. The first robot called the "autocato" can peel, stone, and cut an avocado, and then turn it into guacamole in 26 seconds. The other robot dubbed the "digital makeline" has the ability to portion salads and bowls based on orders from the mobile app.

The robots are part of an automation push that Chipotle's executives think could reduce the number of employees and help lower rising labor costs, as reported by the Daily Mail. The machines are currently being used at restaurant locations in Huntington Beach and Corona del Mar.

The controversial $20 minimum wage hike signed into law by Gov. Newsom took effect on April 1, which immediately sparked mass layoffs and permanent business closures. Burger King and other chains have already reduced the number of cashiers by rolling out digital ordering terminals in their Golden State locations.  .  .  .

The ONLY reason automation is being introduced here is because 'minimum wage workers' [sic] cost more than the minimum wage level of labor they provide.
