Hezbollah walkie-talkies explode in second day of surprise attacks

Hezbollah walkie-talkies exploded across Lebanon on Wednesday in a second round of electronic communications device explosions just one day after 12 people were killed and thousands were injured in similar explosions.

Lebanese media reported several explosions in Beirut and Dahiyeh, a Hezbollah-dominated suburb of the capital. Pictures and videos posted on social media showed large fires resulting from the explosions, which were apparently hidden in devices other than the pagers used in Tuesday’s attack.

One picture showed what appeared to be a detonated walkie-talkie.

Axios, citing two sources familiar with the matter, reported that thousands of Hezbollah walkie-talkies were blown up across Lebanon. They were booby-trapped long in advance by Israeli intelligence and delivered to Hezbollah, which had ordered them as part of the group’s emergency communications system to be used in the event of war with Israel.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported that three people were killed in the explosions in the town of Sohmar in the Bekaa Valley, indicating the detonations were not limited to Beirut. Elsewhere at least one was killed and 100 injured.

A reporter from Al Arabi Network described the volume of Wednesday’s explosions as more than the first attack.

One video showed at least a dozen explosions going off in a single apartment building.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Capitol Police responded to an urgent call amid reports of a loud disturbance in the congressional offices today. Michigan Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib was later reportedly uninjured after her pager mysteriously exploded.

The incident occurred earlier Tuesday in Tlaib's Capitol Hill office, where her pager had been sitting on a desk before spontaneously detonating, causing a significant scare but leaving no reported injuries.

"It just blew up right out of nowhere!" one of Tlaib's staffers said following the explosion. "We were just going about our business, checking over the congresswoman's itinerary of Death-To-Israel protests, when there was a huge blast in the next room. We went in there, papers were flying everywhere, and there was smoke… thank goodness she had put the pager on the desk. Such a crazy, unexplained incident, right?"

Yesterday's question after the pager operation was why Iran's ambassador to Lebanon carried a pager sourced to Hezbollah for operational communications. Mojtaba Amani got injured in the explosion, although initial reports claimed at first that his injuries were "superficial." The New York Times heard otherwise:

Iran’s ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amini, lost one eye and severely injured his other eye when a pager he was carrying exploded in a simultaneous wave of blasts targeting wireless electronic devices, according to two members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps briefed on the attack.

Why would a diplomat carry a communication device connected to a terror network currently attacking another state, intended for operational purposes? We'll get back to that question, but first, let's look at today's question, asked in Star Trek V fashion: What did nearly 200 IRGC troops need with a Hezbollah pager?

19 Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) members were killed after their pagers had exploded in Deir ez-Zur in eastern Syria, Saudi news source Al-Hadath reported Wednesday afternoon.

An additional 150 IRCG members were also wounded in the explosions, Army Radio reported, citing the Saudi news source.

From what I've read, Israel told LIEden-Peeps or Foggy Bottom Denizens that they were going to do something significant, so the surprise was what the something was rather than that something happened. It might have been leak-bait in the sense that what the Hezzies might prepare for, if informed, would be air raids or an artillery strike, i.e. expending energy into something irrelevant.

BTW, the timing of the walkie-talkie attack may have been chosen to coincide with the funeral custom that the body should be buried as soon as possible. Since the people keeping the mourners organized in a Hezzie's funeral and some of the mourners will probably be Hezzies ... . Hamas attacked last year on Simchat Torah, so the "respect" is mutual.
