Hundreds of handheld pagers exploded across Lebanon on Tuesday, injuring dozens of people, in an apparent targeting of Hezbollah members, according to a state media report.

Lebanon's state-run National News Agency reported that in Beirut’s southern suburbs and other areas "the handheld pagers system was detonated using advanced technology, and dozens of injuries were reported." It wasn't immediately clear if people were killed.

A security source in Lebanon told Reuters that the pagers were carried by members of Hezbollah. A Hezbollah official, speaking to the outlet on condition of anonymity, described the incident as a detonation that was the 'biggest security breach' during the nearly year-long war with Israel.

A Hezbollah official said that at least 150 people, including members of the group, were wounded in different parts of Lebanon when the pagers they were carrying exploded.

I had a flip phone a few decades ago that starting smoking in my pocket before I was able to toss into a full sink of water.  Hot enough, some of the phone internals were melted.

Sometimes old technology is too dumb to be insecure. An example is the use of FAX to communicate HIPAA-controlled info. Hezbollah evidently thought that pagers would be a secure way to coordinate certain types of actions - every device hand-delivered, no interceptable text.

I wonder why Israel picked this time to push the button? Was Hezbollah planning an attack in the next few days that Israel wanted to put a kink in their plans to execute it ??

We may never know, but I bet after this much planning, there was a reason for this attack being today.

In some conditions these batteries become firebombs.

It is not beyond reason that someone has figured out how to detonate them remotely.

According to Officials briefed on the matter who spoke with the New York Times; the Thousands of Encrypted Pagers which Exploded today in Lebanon, resulting in Hundreds of Hezbollah Members to be Killed or Critically Injured, were Imported into Lebanon by the Taiwanese-Based Pager Company, Gold Apollo. With the Pagers having been Boobytrapped by Israeli Agents before reaching Lebanon, where roughly 1-2 Ounces of Explosive Material was placed next to the Device Battery, alongside a Trigger to allow Remote Detonation.

At 3:30PM earlier today, the Pagers received a Message that appeared to be coming from Senior Hezbollah Leadership, which then Activated the Explosive within the Device; with the Pagers being Programmed to “Beep” several times before Exploding.

What is more likely is that someone, knowing who supplies who, interdicted the supply chain and rigged them with a little explosive, set to go off when a specific code was entered. The Hizb'allah got a heck of a deal on pagers...
