Harris survived the debate (with a huge assist from the moderators) but Trump scored crucial points
By Post Editorial Board

Trump gets fact checked by moderators on violent crime during debate

Donald Trump got to Kamala Harris’ core problem in his debate close, waving off all her promises about what she’d do in office: “Why hasn’t she done it already?”

Hard to think of a better riposte to her “We won’t go back” slogan — which aims to appeal to Americans’ desperate desire for change from the Biden policies she shares.

Harris had a pretty smooth night: She did her homework for once, including prepping lines guaranteed to get under Trump’s skin — some of which plainly did put him off-balance.

And of course she had backup from the moderators, ABC’s David Muir and Linsey Davis — who targeted far more tough questions at Trump than at Harris, and all of their “fact-checking.”

Worse: Whenever she started to babble in trying to defend her own record, they rescued her by changing the subject.

What irks me is that Team Harris had telegraphed what she was going to do all week but yet Trump fell repeatedly for her bait.  The guy never learns!

Rule No. 1 in Politics......

Perceptions are 10X more powerful than reality.

I can't believe the NYP is calling this a survival.  She won.  But wouldn't have without complicit criminal ABC Moderator support  Isn't election interference still a crime?

He got complacent and bought the meme that she couldn't do a debate decently. He also needed a shock collar to stop taking the bait.
I think it was her performance of a lifetime, because this woman has no intelletual self awareness or social skill.   We forget this is the strumpet who spewed on for several minutes about yellow school buses and Venn diagrams.

Trump did better than people think. He planted the emotional seeds that people will remember long after they forget Kamala's vacuous platitudes. Kamal did "succeed" in the sense that she appeared plausibly presidential, disciplined and ready to serve. But Trump, in spite of his inability to assuage the fears of his being unhinged, did manage to sow seeds of doubt. What voters are going to remember about this debate is "the country is going to hell, immigrants are eating pets, unnecessary wars caused by weakness, etc." The seeds of doubt have much more power, especially with the low educated undecided voter. The election dynamic is basically unchanged, which I would have predicted prior to the debate.

  • Ah, the air is so much fresher here...
It's not what either candidate said, it's what Americans hear and perceive and how it plays.

In that light, Harris might not have done was well as thought, nor did Trump do as badly.
The Republic is lost.

Agreed. I tried to watch in the most objective frame of mind I could. Fact is, Trump made a lot of extremely valid points. Maybe he was "rattled" but that doesn't make his points invalid.

Good points.  I think there are two aspects of traditional debating....   One that which relies on the nuts and bolts of the art, and is scored like a sporting event.  On those merits Harris clearly won.

OTOH, it his hard to enumerate the intangibles and side bar which has not only debate moderators who skew the process and put their finger on the scale, but this is not a traditional college debate with no pre-existing narratives.

Pre-existing in that there is a huge part of America that realizes MSM bias, and knows how the left works their tactics to their advantage, at all cost.  I think America also realizes that style does not trump substance when it comes to people's well being, safety, and financial security.

This might be an example like lawfare, where people don't like falsely attacking an opponent for pure political gain.  I was amazed how Trump's poll numbers went up 3 points after his mug shot.  The sleazy dims didn't see that coming, and this just might be a repeat.
