‘They’re Gonna Pay For It’: A Single Texas Billionaire May Be About To Force Greenpeace USA Into Bankruptcy

Nick Pope  |  September 9, 2024  |  12:11 PM ET

The Texas billionaire owner of a major pipeline company is on the precipice of potentially bankrupting Greenpeace USA, The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday.

Kelcy Warren’s company, Energy Transfer, is seeking legal recourse against Greenpeace’s American arm in court, alleging that several Greenpeace USA entities paid for attacks against the company’s Dakota Access Pipeline and proliferated misinformation about the firm and its project in 2016, according to the WSJ. At the time, the project was a flashpoint in the environmental movement’s crusade against major fossil fuel infrastructure developments, and it was ultimately completed in 2017.

“Everybody is afraid of these environmental groups and the fear that it may look wrong if you fight back with these people,” Warren said in a televised interview in 2017, according to the WSJ. “But what they did to us is wrong, and they’re gonna pay for it.”

Eco-activists flocked to the construction site of the pipeline in North Dakota in 2016 to try to stop the $3.8 billion project from being built, and clashes between the protesters and law enforcement occasionally turned violent, according to the WSJ. The lawsuit, which seeks $300 million in damages, would probably crush Greenpeace USA, though it does not pose such a threat to Greenpeace’s international operation  .  .  .

If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."     -Ayn Rand-

  • I was a "conspiracy theorist". Now I'm just right.
Ninety five percent of the people arrested at that protest were from out of State. Three working (active) pipelines were tampered with. Local ranchers and farmers lost a million or more in mutilated or killed livestock and damage to equipment. The construction company suffered over a million in damages. When the protesters left, they left 720 semi loads of trash and debris on the site, in the normal flood plain, along with a body wrapped in a blue tarp in a tributary creek and a half dozen puppies.
I have not watched anything with Jennifer Lawrence in it since, because she showed up to protest.

Incidentally, the pipeline did not cross tribal land. As I undrstand it, when the tribe reneged on the original right of way deal and demanded substantially more money, the pipeline was routed around tribal lands.

I hope that Greenpeace gets their clock cleaned. I have no patience for jerks from elsewhere who come to throw their sanctimony around.--And even less for ecoterrorists who try to damage working pipelines and create an incident.

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
